Good point.... one of the joys of owning a car is the ability to control as much of the machine as possible!

I definitely think t hat if manual no longer existed I would not really care about driving that much anymore.


Yup, even an eight year old can step on the gas and go. It's pointless with an auto. I get bored. The last thing you want to be while driving is bored.


Ya, but it beats being stuck in a recliner getting fat!
 
I'm not quite sure what is so exciting about manually shifting gears that makes driving more enjoyable than letting an auto do it for you. It doesn't really makes sense to me that driving a shift-stick is more exciting when most people admit that driving a shift-stick is best done on the highway where you are not shifting all that much. If shifting is so much fun how come people don't like doing it in stop and go traffic?

Have you checked out many common models and compared auto vs. manual? The difference is, in some cases, non-existent.

I have some friends that insisted on having a manual in their next car. I'd usually follow that statement up with "Control issues?"

I'm not embarrased about how God hardwired me either LOL, so I don't at all deny that I enjoy the interaction I get when shifting gears, nor the increased confidence when in poor driving conditions. There is no question that a skilled driver using a manual transmission will have a better chance of avoiding an accident when compared to more automated computer controlled auto shifter. I'll up you one and say that I don't want a car with ECT or ABS as well, I can do a better job with my own grey matter in both cases. A bit too old school for you? Oh well, live and learn.

Please elaborate. What about a skilled driver in an auto? An auto can pop into neutral just as easily as a manual, the rest is just braking and turning.

I also prefer a manual, and not just on open highway, I do enjoy driving it in traffic as well. The fact that my wife cannot drive one and needs to be able to use both vehicles freely dictated why I have 2 autos now. When I can afford a 3rd vehicle or my daughter can begin riding out of her car seat cannot come soon enough.
 
I drove nothing but manuals for 30+ years, but when I turned 51, arthritis (especially in the left foot) made it hard to keep using the clutch so I changed over to automatic transmission. Manuals are more fun (economical), but things have changed for me.
 
I've never bought a new car with an automatic. The only reason I might consider an auto is if I had to drive in severe traffic often, but that is unlikely. Or if I physically had a problem with the clutch foot/leg. I think sticks are better in harsh winter climates, especially if you get stuck in snow/ice occasionally. I think it's a lot easier to wreck an auto trying to get out of a hole than a stick.
 
Well, years ago manuals also got better gas mileage on average, not so today, the autos shift better then humans and are just more efficient I believe. I own a 6 spd, great fun to drive but at times can truly be a pain. Probably my last manual as well

Three pedals > two pedals. That is a difference.

My left leg needs something to do, so it won't feel redundant.
 
How about tapping your foot to the beat of the music? Almost sounds like some people have control issues on here

The 5spd's in the Ford's nowdays along with the tow/haul mode (good for traffic and/or crawling besides towing) is just as good a manual.
 
Yeah I can honestly say that traffic sucked with a MT when I had my tC. But nothing beat having the roof and windows wide open, cruising down the highway and shifting gears in the summer evenings.

It was my only stick car, and my next car/truck will be stick(project car). The Xterra is an automatic and while the convenience is nice it gets boring with the "point & go" driving. If it weren't for my foot I'd have stuck it out, but a project car will feed my need....my need for SPEED!(heh sorry).
 
Not really efficiency by the vehicle, its the efficiency of the driver.

Manuals are less and less common on vehicles. Most kids today(teens) don't learn the proper shifting techniques and go Fast and the Furious, extremely hard take offs and shifts.

Other people are just happy they can time pressing a clutch pedal down and shift the lever into the right gear when they let off the clutch.

you are the only person I have EVER heard to praise a mitsu transmission!
 
Now the trend is manumatics that you can shift with tapping a lever, or semi-automatics that clutch and shift for you. Even Formula 1 cars have these set ups. The computer can clutch and shift faster and match engine revs better than a driver could.
 
Manuals are cheaper and less trouble to maintain. If I was forced to drive in congested areas more, I might give up and get an automatic.
