Thinking about doing this with a friend. I am at college at the moment. Don't have a job, but want to get one here soon.

Apparently the machine gets the parts replaced for each person so it is sterile.

Biolife Blood Plasma Donation Webpage

It is $20 if I donate, and I can do it 2x a week. Does anyone have any information, tip, comments, or advice?

Thanks in advance.

Shoot, aim for the stars, donate body fluids galore!

I used to give blood in high school using my ID, and my cousins, as we both looked similar and he was a wuss. Got me 2 pizzas free a month for that, sleep it off, eat some fruits and veggies, youre good. lol

I've done it so much I have a scar from the needle, nothing ever wrong with me, I got 30 at one place and 35 at another, 20 seems kind of low.

It isn't fun or comfortable but its worth gas money. Don't do it for beer money, I made that mistake to donate and go to the bar that night. It does stretch your beer budget but it is prob not safe.

I did this for about a year in college with biolife. It was better pay though, went $50-95/wk. Its very similar to giving blood, if youve done that before you'll be fine. I eventually had to stop because my overall protein in my body started dropping after a year of doing it. Just never went back because it dropped in value, 75 vs 40.

This is how it went for me.

First appt, you get a physical and kind of an orientation.

To donate they make you sign in and take a survey of questions to make sure you can donate.

They then take your stick your finger and fill up 2 viles of blood about the size of toothpicks. They then test your blood protein and look for hematocrit. While they are testing that, they take your blood pressure, body weight, and body temprature. If everything checks out you then go on to donate. Now the key to giving plasma is the person hooking you up, if they're good with a needle, its painless but sometimes it hurts like heck of the person isn't the best. For me it a 50/50 good stab with the needle, you'll learn very quickly on who you want to stick the needle in you. Takes about 45 mins depending on the amount you'll donate and that is determined by your weight. I weighed 175lbs and gave 680ml. I havent done this for almost 3 years now and i still have a scar on my left arm where the needle went it, looks like I was a previous drug user who was always shooting up in the arm.

Would I do this again, probably not. But like you I was in college and with a full load and tough classes, $40 was grocery money and a little spending money with friends.

Around here they pay $150-180 a month. The company doing it actually moved 30 miles to find more willing donors.

I say go for it but don't be a sap re your compensation. OTOH if the phebotomist is cute or doesn't stick you that bad, go for it!

Just got done donating less than an hour ago. Been doing it for a 2 1/2 years now and have donated about 200 times. Have used the same arm every time and they always use the same hole. You will get a scar after awhile in that area but other than than no other problems. You can donate 2 times in a 7 day period and the payment varies on where you do it. Here its $58 per week. Go for it. You make some cash and Plasma is in demand for medical services.

Looks like they only have 1 center in VA, and that's a long drive from NOVA to Harrisonburg? $20 won't even cover your gas to there.

Anyone donated sperm before?

My question is how much do they get for the blood?

If the value of your blood is much more than $20, than that pay is an insult and I wouldnt do it. Its clear that they dont really want your blood.

I never personally was a fan of being stuck twice so they could return part of my blood. Yuck. I barely like being stuck once.

I dont mind giving blood, but like all things, if they hound me on it, Im not inclined to do it.

If someone needs it or you need to bank some for later or something, it may be worth it. But I wouldnt literally be selling myself for a bit of gas and pizza money that you will blow anyway.

I've heard the Red Cross gets $400 for a pint of blood for their handling of it. Sure, they deserve it. But shouldn't "handling" include orange juice for the donor that doesn't taste like the can it came from? They can't/don't ethically pay donors; that's cool with me, but they could make it a more pleasant experience. Like by hiring people who can stick painlessly. And who don't put their thumb on your blood-hole and mumble, "uh, can I get a supervisor?"

When giving plasma, they don't take any blood. Blood is 55% plasma, plasma is 98% water. They spin the blood cells off and put them back into your vein. They pump a 500ml IV back into you to replenish the fluid. They use the same needle and hole for everything.

$20 is a rip off but they put these places in college towns where people will do it do for quick easy cash.

I lived in Dallas for 10 years and I donated my plasma whenever they called me. It was kind of a hassle because the donor place wasn't in a good area and it took awhile to get there. I'm CMV negative (something to do with my plasma can go to burn victims and premature babies) and occasionally my plasma was in high demand. It took about two hours and toward the end of the procedure it always got painful in the arms. Luckily, they always showed a movie to distract the brain. I now live in an area where they don't have such a program and I just give whole blood instead. I'm on the marrow donor list, but they've I guess I'm unique enough that I'm not needed.
I looked back and I guess I really could have cashed it in had I accepted money. Oh, well.

I am going to school in Harrisonburg.

I do it for free once in a while (like once a year), and get cold called all the time because of my AB blood type. They always got me when they say the kid with a burn need my plasma...

Anyways, it does take longer than just a regular donation because it take a few cycle to get the blood out then pump the red blood cell with saline back into your body. Your body also does feel cold when they pump the fluid back.

Other than that, not much difference.

You're local "blood bank" may accept plasma......check the yellow pages....it's definitely a good $$$ opportunity......I did it a couple times during college.....hehe. Buddies dragged me onto the bus cause they had pizza, cookies, and apple juice for donators.......we left with $20 gas cards (gift cards, not visa credit card things.....) which was cool for me, cause at the time I rode the bus, so I traded the card for cash with my buddy. Plus they left us off the bus with a bunch of coupons for local bars, restaurants, barbers, etc.

I think one of the times I donated, I did the plasma thing, where they seperate the blood cells, and only keep the plasma......and that's when I got the gas card. But yea, if you can donate, do it

I need to get back in the loop really.....
