Does what I'm considering make sense?

I own an 08 volvo s60 that is serviced by the local Volvo/Saab dealer. I've been paying extra to get M1 0W40. I'm approaching my next service and have been thinking about doing a uoa (using my pump)to see if the viscosity is consistent with a 0W40 motor oil. The oil has about 7k on it. will Blackstone be able to tell me if the oil most likely started life as a 0W40?

I don't know but having a oil graded up to a 40 (new) may shear down below that, and so many factors would be involved. To many factors I would believe... Age, mileage, fuel dilution etc etc etc.

I don't send in samples, but wouldn't they be asking the oil type & grade when the samples are sent in?

Is the purpose to police the dealer to assure you are getting your $$ worth?

If so, maybe sample it before you rack up miles on it.

My main motive would be to make sure they are using the M1. Their bulk oil is a 5W30 Castrol semi syn. On the Blackstone form I planned to pose the question "is the used oil consistent with having srarted as a 0W40? i realize that it would have made more sense to do this immediately after it was changed, but I only recently thought of using the uoa in this way.

There is a good chance we'd recognize the Mobil 1 0w40 on various factors, not necessarily based on the viscosity.

The Moly, Boron, Calcium, etc. will help clue us in.

Volvo are great by the way. The build quality seems really high. I recently had a rental S80. Beautiful materials, such a solid car.

Enjoy it!

It will be difficult to tell, since the 0w-40 shears down very quickly and the ending viscosity is likely to be around 11cSt.

I'll do the uoa and ask Blackstone if they can tell but also post the results on the used oil forum to get opinions from the forum members. Maybe I'm too suspicious?

I like the car a lot now that the [censored] TPMS system is fixed. I bought the car in March 09 and have been chasing a TPMS system problem since I bought it. The warning light suggested that there was a problem with the system, not that there was a tire problem. It caused 3 different warning lights to come on the dash; my tolerance for that sort of thing is about nil. It only happened intermittently when the car was driven on the interstate. It was a pain. BTW, isn't "[censored] TPMS" the correct technical name?

Yes you'll be able to tell if the oil is M1 0W-40.
Even if the oil has sheared, the KV100 spec' is not going
to shear down to the 10 cSt level of the Castrol 5w30 blend.
The Phos' level will also be higher at 900 plus ppm for the M1.
