That's why I don't like the Castrol synthetic product: It still contains many trace elements. Now Amsoil advertises that their oil is the extended drain interval oil. They do this by pumping up the additive package. They can have as much as 3 times as many additives as Mobil 1, so in theory it can take more shearing, lasting longer. More additives means less actual oil in the mix, resulting in less lubrication, less cooling, more wear and tear...you know the rest. The oil may last longer, but at what price? Your engine? That's not a good trade off for me. Don't get me wrong. Amsoil is a very good oil, but no matter how good any oil is, your engine is still going to produce contaminants and by-products, and the longer they are in your engine the more damage being done.

The used oil analysis in the used oil analysis section do not show appreciable and significant differences between the performance of Mobil 1 and the performance of Amsoil's products in similar applications.

I do not believe much of the highlighted text, including the hypothesis concerning additives, is very valid in practice. Mobil 1 is an excellent example of an extended drain oil, and the new EP version, with additional use of super-high viscosity index PAO and slightly thicker formulations should be even better.
 
If this were true, Amsoil would be responsible for some of the worst used oil analysis on this board. However, a quick search will show that Amsoil is responsible for some of the best used oil analysis posted.

Nope, this guy does not know what he is talking about. The 10-12% add package is disolved in, imagine this, synthetic oil. When you disolve 4cc's of table salt into 10cc's of water you end up with less than 10.5 cc's of solution. The addative package doesn't talk up very much space. Also, these additive packages aren't all detergents, but in many cases friction modifiers and anti-wear agents. These additives pick up where the base oil left off - THIS IS A GOOD THING.

Amsoil may have more of some additives, but it has less of others. I imagine the MSDS shows a similar amount of base oil for both. This guy's "3 times" comment is totally bogus and his theory behind it is completely blown out of the water with the introduction of Mobil's new EP line.

I also like how this guy says all synthetic oils are so good, but then finds a problem with everything but Mobil 1.
 
I've learned that:
* multigrades get thicker as they heat up;
* Only PAO is truly synthetic;
* phosphorous is a sludge forming contaminant (which M1 doesn't contain);
* battery acid is phosphoric acid;
* EP additives are manufactured from zinc, copper and brass

as to the "3 times the additives of M1...must be all of that unobtanium that's not being tested for yet.

Stick around here, learn and read. Sure oil gets dirty.......but a lot of other things happen with use, too!

I don't care for the Castrol products 'cuz they charge Group IV prices for Group III oil.

Wait a minute. He's slamming Castrol because it has "trace elements"(non PAO formula) and he's telling us that Super Tech synthetic is a "great deal" and it too is a Group III oil that contains those very same "trace elements"???

I use a synthetic that is not a PAO, it's a polyol ester.

But it's true that Castrol is playing word games in the US with Syntec (not allowed in Europe). Friends that were using Syntec and found out what was going on bailed. No matter what Castrol does in the future, they are not going back. So the market for Syntec is those that read pretty labels and pick one.
 
This author is not a well-read commentator on oil matters.
I think he probably has more false sentences than true ones. Below I've outlined the setences that are true.

The base oil itself will continue to lubricate, and it's the properties imparted by the additives to the oil like TBN that will likely fail before the base oil loses its actual "lubricatingness". This is probably especially true with good synthetics, where the base oil is nearly indetructible.]

But to me, the most important reason that I use Mobil 1 is because there are no trace elements in it.
[Can't argue with him about his REASON for using Mobil 1. Although this is kind of a technicality, as his whole logic about "trace elements" seems to basically be non-sense.]

If the base oil never wears out, why doesn't someone offer a 100% base oil?

I'm guessing that question will be good for a few laughs.
