I was just wondering if the 7 quarts of oil required for oil change fill up includes the filter, and if so, is it harmful to use a smaller filter than the Delco my vehicle came with?

The manual on my car mentions a capacity with and without a filter change. I use a Fram XG filter (gold can), which is smaller than the OEM filter and have had no issues. If you're not sure, I'd say fill the filter. Then, put the rest in the engine minus maybe half a quart and start the car. Turn it off after a minute and check the oil level. If it's a little low you can just add the rest.
My manual states 4.3 quarts w/ filter change and when using a smaller filter it comes out to a little less than 4 quarts.

You can use the shorter version of the filter if you want. It is only 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch shorter.

With the filter it calls for the 4200 will take 7 qts with filter. The shorter filter will reduce that 7 qts to around 6.5-6.7 qts.

Personally id want as much oil as i could in my engines system.

The more there is to get dirty and keep from getting hot.

In related news. i was thinking of getting a larger oil pan for my vehicle for this exact reason when i get it rebuilt.
