Does anybody here have an exceptional memory?

I'm basically cursed with remembering everything I did on a particular day.

Last Tuesday on the 3rd I called my mom. "Mom, guess where we were 28 years ago tonight?" And she knows she'll never remember so she starts blurting out guesses.

"Nope. You took me to see Billy Joel at Riverfront Coliseum."

She can't understand how I remember things like that, and neither can I.

I think all of our minds have their particular operational quirks.

In my mind, the letter 'L' is inherently a pale greenish yellow and cold water feels shrill. The word 'mauve' is brown even though it describes a color which is definitely not brown. The number '2' is quite hard and just a tad on the heavy side but not exceptionally heavy as numbers go. I wouldn't be able to tell you what I had for breakfast offhand, but could tell you if it was good or not and could probably tell you a lot about the taste. My boss thinks I'm an idiot for being unable to recall in an instant the names and ages of all the grandchildren of somebody I've definitely never met and probably never heard of; he can, after all even if he's wrong more often than not.

You have one of the varieties of synesthesia.

Not any exceptional memory here. The mind is a very unusual, incredible device. I think it should have an "owner's manual" and we should all have to read and understand it at an early age. I'm rotten at remembering peoples names, the exception being some women's names, but I think that's a "guy thing". Odd tidbits seem to pop out of nowhere. For some reason, we were talking about shaping a log into a beam using a special ax (not any particular specialty of mine). I said "oh yeah, that tool's an adz", got some funny looks. Looked it up, sure enough, it's an adz (can be spelled "adze"). I don't have a clue where that bit of information came from. Probably tucked away for decades. Anyway... what was the question???

That's me - papers everywhere, but I know where everything is. Someone "straightens up" and I'm lost.

Fantastic memory on most things, especially numbers.

When I was a newborn, I remember Dr. Swanson doing... eek... " The Cut".

I mean names, details and such, no way.

But what I can remember are multi-step paths to logic or some weird complex problem solution. The oddest thing, is I really don't think I have any magic powers, but all the time (over many years) at work I hear: - "How did we get to THAT solution.....?? - Oh let's just ask Paul, he always remembers that stuff" But the problem with that, someone will ask ".... yeah and was the answer 49.3 or 49.6?" and I will be

heck if I remember

I'm terrible with names, but other than that I'm pretty good with remembering anything, numbers, appointments, directions etc. the only catch is that I have to "set" the memory as a priority.

Anything work related, I have in my head. What to do next, meetings, important jobs and problems associated with them. I can remember stuff I worked on years ago and as long as I hear some key words describing the job, everything suddenly comes back.

This comes at the expense of other stuff. If wife asks me to pick up few things from the grocery store, I will know that I had to buy something, but I will be calling her what to buy. Birthdays, forget about it, only wife and kids have a reserved space in my brain.
Basically I can retain stuff that I know I have to remember, but if something is perceived by me as less important I will forget it very soon.

I always tell people I have Name Alzheimers. Sometimes when I'm asked "Who was so-n-so?" it seems like my brain deliberately throws up a block and the more I try and remember the farther the answer gets. Then two days (a week) later the name randomly pops into my head.
