Went to Vegas on Sunday, flew out of Charlotte airport with my sister. Because she has some health issues, I used the valet parking. Monday morning I got a call from the Valet parking people that my football/airport car (97 Camry with 208,000) was leaking transmissin fluid. It turns out that it had a leaking transmission line. Got home yesterday, had it towed to the independent garage that I use for that car today. (The dealer sees $$$$ signs every time I bring one of the high mileage cars in). In any event, I'm not sure that I would have noticed the leak in the hustle/bustle of getting out of the airport. It seems that everything is going to be fine so I dodge a bullet. Big time dodged a bullet.

Excellent news!

There was an episode of Storm chasers where the same thing happened to the guy's 94 Ford Explorer.

Had a similar close call with a leak that developed in the oil pan of my last car, a Mazda. Got it fixed, but the service station I brought it to put on the wrong gasket. Never noticed it was leaking until a few days later when the oil light came on while on the highway about a second before the engine blew. Its now rusting away in a landfill somewhere while I'm still paying it off.

The Corolla developed two separate oil leaks since I bought it May. First was at the serpentine tensioner O-ring. Oil level got very low on the dipstick before I picked up on the engine sounding a little different and pulled over to take a look. Then, later, a quick lube stripped the pan and drain plug and it started to leak at the plug about 2,000 km after the oil change. That leak was caught early (oil never got low) and there's an oversized self-tapper on it now until I can replace the pan myself before my next oil change.

After all that, I won't let any service station touch the engine or anything oil related. Tires, brakes, and struts I'll still deal with the only one that I haven't had a bad experience with. Anything else I do myself.

And I check my fluids like someone with OCD. If I'm on the highway I'll pull over and check at every service station I pass. Otherwise I check them at every fillup, and at least once inbetween.
