Hmm...interesting. The owner's manual says the engine is designed for maximum performance with 93, but that only a slight decrease in maximum performance, at most, is to be expected with 91. Reduced gas mileage and knocking are warned to be possible with 87. Lots of squawking on the Forester driver's website from owners who live in CA and can't easily get 93 octane.
93 is more common where I live than 91, so I'll stick with it. Maybe next time I'm up in the mountains and can't find 93, I won't freak out so much about using 91... ;^)
