Dodge Dart to use transmission from Hyundai

Makes more sense than the article really goes into. Even before they were working together in GEMA, Chrysler used to supply some auto transmissions to Hyundai.
 
I had a dodge dart, and a plymouth gold duster! slant 6 tickers, couldn't kill them. Wonder how they would have done on modern oils. Reading further, would seem Chrysler is intent on a blunder.

Reason for that? The artcile explains it well. Chrysler doesn't have a large enough supply of FWD 6 speed autos, and the Hyundai trannies bolt directly to their engines. So until they can supply all of their own, buy hyundais. Whose transmissions aren't horrible anyway.
 
That same box is panned in the new Veloster by Car and Driver.

But programming is everything in a modern car, maybe Chrysler can make it work.

Some type of romance with the Mazda-sourced ATs from 4-cyl Foxbody 'Stangs of the late 80s and mid 90s (again, the 4-cyls.), meanin "American cars with foreign parts."

Hard to top Chevrolet Beretta, though.

It might be better. Had a fiend with the 1989 Hyundai Excel. Tight feeling car! Now, granted, the trans's tend to fail at 60,000 miles on the early early Hyundais (you dont see them a lot) but it was great before that.

Article explains they made claims about mileage, then go shopping for trannies overseas. Now they are trying to make the overseas tranny work to the claims. They make mileage claims without a drive-train? um ok...Sounds like a blunder in the making.

To me the new Dodge Dart and the Kia Forte have a lot of similarities..engine sizes (the 2.0L and 2.4L)...interior....why not the transmission too??


I remember when Chev named their rebadged Corolla as the Nova...same kind of deal...

similarities sure... But the Kia Forte is a KIA/Hyundai platform, the dart is an Alfa Romeo platform. Other than the engines, they have as much in common as a focus does with a corolla.

The CVT in their Caliber/Jeep is the pits in my rental experience.

Until they figure it out who cares. The car looks like a Kia not that its a bad thing.

I'll take my old LeSabre over a new Elantra. It's larger, faster, equally as nimble (verified by driving the LeSabre around the same streets as the 2011 Elantra I test-drove), and apparently got the same or better fuel economy. Plus the 4T65 in it was an okay-shifting transmission.

So yes, this person WOULD rather have a Buick!

It makes sense to use a transmission that'll bolt right up while your own are in short supply. I hope they get it working. Seeing a small Chrysler that's competitive is a good thing. It's been far too long since they've had even a passable small car. The Caliber was a quivering basket case of a car.

Mechanically, no. I also love their advertising. Their cars, not so much, for reasons already gone into.

I hope Dodge can make the transmissions work. They need the Dart launch to go without a hitch.
