Hi,

I own a 2017 Hyundai Elantra Value Edition that I purchased brand new with 10 miles. Currently, I am at 90,300 miles and the car has been flawless. I baby the car, drive very conservatively and do all scheduled maintenance on time. I have been doing 5,000 oil and factory filter changes, with full synthetic and drain and refill transmission fluid every 40,000 miles. Recently though, the car has very slightly been burning oil where I seem to have to add about a 1/2 quart every 3500 miles are so. Realisticly, can I possible take my Elantra to around 200,000 without any major issues? My goal is to get to 200K, than get a new car.

Thanks

Impossible to say. You may get 200K and then it may be a lot less.

A half qt. every 3,500 miles is no big deal. Lower mileage cars can do a lot worse.

And if the motor throws a rod from a bad bearing you will get a free replacement motor which is better than most manufacturers offer.

Who knows. You are maintaining your car well but anything is possible. I use to own a 2013 VW GTI I bought new and floored it all the time to redline. I maintained it well. I had to add 1/2 a quart of oil around the 4K mark on the oil. My brother has near 200K on it and the engine has never been opened up and it still has the original turbo. I spoke of it a few years back in this post.

My 2017 SantaFe started using some oil at around 55K. I switched to Havoline High Mileage 10-30 in warm weather and 5-30 in winter. It reduced oil consumption in half. The 2.4 seems to like the stuff. I get it online from WalMart.

Being in the Hyundai family, including personally driving an '18 Elantra Value Edition since it had 7 miles, you should have fairly good odds of reaching 200k miles. We are also the original owners of an '07 Santa Fe with 250k.

Keep it going with the scheduled maintenance and you should enjoy many more miles. What oil weight are you using? I personally use only 5W30 (late fall/winter) and 10W30 (summer).

We had a gen 1 Honda mdx with their venerable 3.5L V6, a fabulous motor by all accounts. It used 1 quart by 5000 miles and a second quart by 7500, as it approached 100,000. I’d say by these metrics the Hyundai is not setting any flags at all. 1 quart every 3000 would be just fine, and even more would be ok as long as you keep up with it. The old rule of thumb was 1 quart per 1000 was where we’d start to get concerned.

Do you do your own oil changes or take it somewhere?

1/2 qt as listed is really not bad but is that just recently or has been increasing? Have you ever changed the PCV valve? It is not expensive and easy to do.

Next couple oil changes if you do it, or trust your shop to do it, use the new Valvoline Restore and Protect in whatever viscosity meets your requirements or desires.

Walmart lists the VRP as an option for a $65 oil change (up to 5 qts). I would want to stay and watch it was actually being used but I do my own changes.

There is no Magic 8 ball here but I would think you could easily take it out to 300K miles. If me, I would do a piston soak with Berryman B12 to see if that loosens up the piston oil rings and helps with the oil burning.

Dang this is like asking if I eat healthy will I live to 90?? You or the car could be hit by a bus tomorrow and expire. Just take care of yourself and the car and fate will handle the rest.
