I would think that a Zero weight oil must use a better base oil than say a 5 or 10w oil in order to go that low in grade. I am just curious.
Maybe a better question would be: What allows an oil to be a zero weight grade?

I think he meant 0w30 0w-20 not 0w-0 if you can call it like that.

I thought maybe you were talking about some kind of super race oil that isnt defined. so they just call it 0 weight.

the 0w20 could use thinner basestocks with more VII so its not necessarily better.
it all depends on the product and the engineering that went into it.
and quality of ingredients.
so an example
any 0w20 vs non-syn 5w20... probably the 0w20
honda semi-syn 0w20 better than ... Pennzoil Platinum 5w20.. no.
Mobil 1 0w20 better than Mobil 1 5w20? who knows
etc. There is nothing beyond a very generic broad generalization.

There are two ways to get a 0w oil:
Use alot of VII or a higher quality base stock
Most oils use one method or the other. Some use both methods. You can usually tell by comparing viscosity index and volatility.

Here is one possible way to produce a Full Synthetic 0W30:
Base Oils:
PAO 40cSt – 3-5%
PAO 6cSt – 7-15%
PAO 4cSt – 35-50%
Ester 5-15%
PI Package – 7-9%
Viscosity Modifier (VII) – 2 to 10%
Viscosity – 10.25 cSt
HTHS – 3.1
NOACK –
Base Oils:

0w requires a higher VI base oil/oils. That can be achieved via a blending of high VI base stock and viscosity improvers. Due to the need to pass volatility tests, there cannot be too much viscosity improver, therefore there tends to be more PAO or ester base stocks because of their much higher VI.
