3K! Not since maybe 1980, if not earlier.

Nobody has been able to explain yet how I would've been better off in the slightest if I had changed oil in my '81 Mazda (listed below) twice as frequently, or changed filters more often.

I do 3k on both of my carbureted v8 engines because I now live in town and do about 7 miles round trip to work every day so it's very severe service. Works out to a couple of oil changes a year.

My girlfriend does the same short trips in her Hyundai sonata with the GDI 2.4 and does 3 month oil changes which is about 1500 miles. The oil looks black immediately after the oil change.

I change both cars twice a year. One of them goes 5-6k/year. Mostly short trips. The other goes 8-10k/year. A combination short/not so short trips. If we drove more I'd probably change at 5k or so. We like to use the remote start a little on these really hot days and in winter.

Oh heck no!!

I first started reading here in about 2004 when our two vehicles were going about 30k each. The data doesn't lie - for a non-DI application, 3000 is a complete waste for a dino, and 5000 a waste of synthetic in most applications.

does that count as severe usage?

I've always ran synthetic in my nissans outside of a few times I ran shell from menards and change them around 3500-4000. Oils cheap engines aren't. Nissans severe duty used to recommend 3750 for severe, with a lot of 4 and 5 mile trips I figure I fall into that category.

I do for the most part. Of all the things you can waste money on, oil changes isnt one of them. My Mustang is once a year and generally thats 4000-6000 kms. The truck I do 5000-6000 kms. I've been using M1 for 20 years. Engines are like new. It is overkill but I dont care.
