I've run a few wooden toothpicks around the threads of new WIX oil filters and mostly found a thin layer of black oily substance and the occasional metal shaving. The shavings are not a big concern because they were only found one here and one there, not on every filter. But I do try to remember to wipe out the threads, not using my finger.
