Do I trust the dipstick or the manual?

Patman,

Are you seeing any large bubbles on your dipstick with the larger oil amount?

I usually fill the crankcase with oil until I see bubbles and then back off 1/4 quart until it
disappears. I record amounts and then see when they bottom out. This has worked in all my V8's and 4 bangers alike.

I don't recall seeing anything unusual like that on the dipstick, but I also check the oil after it's sitting overnight, so if there was excess oil in there that might be foaming up, wouldn't the bubble subside by the morning? I guess I should check the oil a few minutes after a hot shutdown on my way home from work today.
