Do Automatic Trans Torque Converters really "amplify-multiply" torque

I had a '68 Impala with a 307 and a PowerGlide. wasn't the quickest thing off the line, but was the ultimate highway car.

Did the Dynaflow actually have gears?

I've been researching it and can't find anything on whether it was a direct drive tranny or not.

I do know that later, it gained a 2, then 3 stage T/C, which basically gave it 3 different stalls in one, which would seem to indicate direct-drive. Buick called it the "variable-pitch converter" and likened it to variable-pitch propellers on aircraft.

Pretty cool actually.

Small leaks seem to be the norm on it at present, but like a Pratt and Whitney radial, the leaks just seem to indicate that they still have fluid in them and in no way affect the reliability, which appears good.
