Do any oils have both BMW LL-01 and GM4718M?

I guess it is not likely, but I thought I would ask. I have a 2002 Corvette and a 2001 X5. It would be nice to use just one oil. I live in Costa Mesa, CA, so the climate is moderate, and I never track the Corvette, so it does not see much punishment.

I see many C5 drivers going with M1 0w-40. That has the BMW spec; I am thinking of going with that.

Thoughts?

Yeah, looking at the list of GM4718M approved oils, I don't think any of them carry the BMW LL01 spec.

Do you know what are the specifics/requirements of GM4718M?

I know LL01 is loosely based on ACEA A3.

I've seen some people using GC in their C5. And GC carries LL01 spec, so that may be another oil worth considering.

Also, welcome to BITOG!

Nothing easily off the shelf will, but m1 0w-40 or gc will be the closest to fit the bill...

Looking at Mobil's website, they state their regular M1 5W-30 and their AFE 0W-30 are 4718M compliant. Neither are BMW LL-01 approved.

M1 0W-40 is BMW LL-01 approved and GM LL-A-025 approved. German Castrol 0W-30 is the same.

Unless your goal is a very long drain interval, I'd think any of these oils would work fine in both vehicles.

According to the Castrol paperwork I've got, both 5W-30 and 10W-30 complies with GM4718M. Neither is indicated as meeting the BMW LL-01 spec.

GC meets the BMW spec, and I would think that it would meet the GM spec, if Castrol paid for the necessary testing.
Based upon claimed compliance with various tough manufacturers' specs, GC blows Edge away.

+1 I just checked my bottles. No mention of BMW LL specs.

I would go with the Mobil1 0w40 as it does meet the GM Opel spec.

Mobil 1 0W-40 has the following builder approvals:
0W-40
MB-Approval 229.3 X
MB-Approval 229.5 X
OPEL Long Life Service Fill GM-LL-A-025 X
OPEL Diesel Service Fill GM-LL-B-025 X
BMW LONGLIFE OIL 01 X
VW 502 00 X
VW 505 00 X
PORSCHE A40 X

Castrol 0w30

Castrol SYNTEC 0W–30 European Formula is engineered to meet the Mercedes Benz 229.5 specification. The 0W–30 viscosity grade is ideal for winter conditions where low temperature pumpability is required. A unique, low–temperature formulation provides exceptional pumpability in cold weather and allows for unaided engine starts down to –40ºF. Exceeds all car and light truck manufacturer's warranty requirements for the protection of gasoline, diesel and turbocharged engines where API SL, SJ, SH, CF or CD is recommended. Exceeds European ACEA: A3, B3, B4; VW 502 00, 505 00; MB 229.1, 229.3, 229.5; BMW LL–01; GM–LLA–025, GM–LL–B–025 and the engine protection requirements of ILSAC GF–3 for API Certified Gasoline Engine Oils.

I wouldn't be surprised if the two specs (4718M and LL01) are mutually exclusive. 4718M oils seem to be Xw-20 and thin Xw-30 grades, whereas LL01 oils are Xw-40 and thick Xw-30 grades. GC, being a thick Xw-30, may not qualify for 4718M.

As does GC, but those LL-A/B-025 specs may not have much in common with 4718M. 4718M is a US spec and probably has fuel economy in mind, among other things.

My understanding is that is a high heat tolerance spec.

Actually, Castrol seems to have two different products to address the two specs:

Castrol SLX Professional 4718
Castrol SLX Professional LL01

I'm guessing they wouldn't bother with two different products if one could satisfy both specs.

FYI, here's a little info about SLX Prof 4718:
http://www.slx4718.com/EN_benefits.asp

But it's mostly marketing talk. Has anyone had any luck finding a spec sheet for SLX Prof 4718? There was also some speculation that SLX Prof 4718 is the same oil as the US Edge 5w-30...

Interesting.
I thought that 4718 was mainly about deposit control under high heat conditions, at which I thought GC would excel.
If two different Castrol blends are offered, one being 4718 specific, then I guess I was wrong about GC likely being capable of meeting 4718.
Castrol would not otherwise bother to offer a 4718 specific blend.
