If not what are the dangers of running one in a application where the "regular" filter has a bypass?

All the oil filters I have ever taken apart and/or cruched have had them.
The only filters that don't have them are fuel and hydaulic filters.

There have been reports of people substituting filters and having the can blow off. I guess the media could burst too.

Does that filter have stronger media or is there somthing else special about it?

Actually his Colorado does have a filter bypass valve located in the block, part number 25014612, according to the catalog it opens at 21 psi. The PF61 however does not have an ADBV.

Collapsed/breached media ..and, perhaps, reduced oil flow (if you reach the pump's relief limits). I would think that your oil pump relief valve would have to fail for the can to blow ..maybe not

Wouldnt oil pressure be more than 21psi most of the time?

Probably ..but not the pressure differential across the filter. That bypass won't care what the oil pressure is. Though I must say, that's a rather high setting compared to most of our in filter bypass settings.

GM Cavaliers and Sunfires with the 2.2 L engine specify oil filters that do not have a bypass built in. My wife has had both cars (same engine for both models) and the filters do not have bypasses.

Generic filter numbers are ph3387 (short puny stock filter) and ph3980 (long version). No bypass in either.

GM engines have bypassed built in, and do not require them. Most other engine do need them or you run the risk of starving the engine of oil, or more likely collapsing the filter element.

I ws surprised at that number also, also the fact they even told what it was. I've tested two of the ones used on small block V8's and 4.3 V6's and they open at around 13-15 lbs.
