For not wanting to pay for a membership to that place.

Just messing with ya man. I don't blame you really. I don't think I could want to pay that to shop somewhere as well. I hope you've been doing good.

4wd I like quart containers as well. I got 10 individual qt containers from Federated Auto. 10 Federated Auto full synthetic 5w30 for my Altima 3.5. I also did get a 5 qt container of Federated Auto syn blend 5w30 for $10.29 the lady's Camry. I added 3 more individual quarts too it has well. I did that so I'd have 2 runs for her car. Though I have to say I'm glad I have the individual quart sizes. Easy to top off from a quart size than a big whomping five qt container.

2 out of the 3 cars I service take around 4.5 qts in the sump. Because I have a large enough stash, I'll use an unopened jug for one oil change, then use the remaining half quart along with 4 individual quarts on the next one.

Motorcraft diesel oil comes in 5 qt jugs. I'm pretty sure it would work well in a non-Powersmoke engine

5qt only works from a pricing perspective. From all other perspectives, I prefer individual quarts - easier to pour and leaves less excess oil left over.

My car takes 7 quarts.

The 5qt jugs are best when your engine takes 5 quarts or very close to 5 quarts, where rounding is no problem. Like if your car takes 4.8-5.2 qt and running it with 5 is no problem.

Otherwise, the single quart bottles are easier to pour, and you don't has a huge jug with a half a quart left over.

Neither 4 qt or 5 qt works for most things.

If the auto industry would standardize on the basis of gallons/4L I think it would be good. Big sumps would use two, small sumps would use one.

Having a 4.2 or 4.5qt sump means that to get to full you need more than a gallon jug, but hate to open another.

5qt is likely an approach to get a one size fits most perspective, and if you note the per quart pricing, its also designed to recoup a lot of profit if you buy a single.

What I've done is buy a single quart container say of Mobil Super Synthetic and a 5 qt container of MSS. Use the whole 1 qt container while Changing the oil. Then use the 5 qt container for the rest of it. Then take a funnel and pour the left over from the 5 qt container into the quart size container.

+1

I have a few clean empty 1 qt. containers around. I have two vehicles that take 6 quarts and one which takes 5 quarts. If I have an open 5 quart container I pour it off into the empty 1's. Then when it comes time to change the oil with a 6 quart sump I'll have exactly what I need, and no open 5's laying around.

Part of the plan when I ordered the six pack … now that I own two xw-20 users …

Now that Im back in a 2003 with 6 qt sump, its doesnt work anymore.. I buy only jugs for cost reasons, so I bought 2 and now have a jug with 4qts in it. Thats okay. Itll get used at some point.

Fair enough … but gallons would sure work good for the six quart motors …

The Sentra takes 3 quarts.
The Elantra takes 4 quarts.
4 quarts for the Elantra leaves one.
3 quarts for the Sentra leaves two.
After both cars are changed I have 2 quarts left from the Sentra and 1 quart left from the Elantra.
That makes 3 quarts left. Enough to do the Sentra again.

Sienna takes 5 quarts--easy, and as others have said, it is cheaper. Civic takes 3.8 quarts, so after reading a poster in this thread, my new strategy is simple--I fill up to the brim, a single quart bottle, then pour the rest of the 5 qt jug into the Civic engine.

Not only are 5 quart jugs insanely cheaper than 5 separate single quart bottles, but having a 5 qt jug makes it easy to pour the old oil into--I'd hate to have to pour my old oil into 5 separate single quart jugs.
