DIY HD antenna experiences?

I bought a little cheap plastic box antenna from walmart a few years ago and mounted it on an old well pipe. Tonight I was picking up stations from New orleans that is over 500 miles away I live north of San Antonio Texas. Some times I can pick up oriental stations out of I think Houston only at night though. During the day I can only pick up local stations. I want to buy remote controlled tall mast and a good long range antenna.

That propagation is weather condition related. Don't count on UHF for more than 30 or 40 miles on a regular basis. Unless very strong local station exists in your area a mast mounted preamp is good idea. It may cause problems, though, when you want to receive a distant station in the same direction as a local.

I used that site and made the "Gray Hoverman" design. I've had excellent results with it. I made a second one for my buddy and it's been doing great for him.

The only two problems are:

1. ONE station in my area (CBS affiliate) is broadcasting on VHF. I solved that by using an old rabbit ears that came with a cheap TV.

2. The balun was not as easily found as what the website author suggests. I couldn't find any in my old parts boxes and ended up paying $6 or so for a new one from Radio Shack.
 
Several random points about UHF. Commercial antennas are not very expensive, and while anything NEAR the proper length will receive local stuff, there is some real technology in getting "gain" across the entire UHF band. "Gain" means receiving better than a plain old dipole (rabbit ears) in one direction, at the expense of the other directions. There is no free lunch in the antenna business, you can't have "gain" in all directions, the trick is to give up response in directions you don't need (like straight up) in return for better response along the horizion, for example. It's called "pattern" in the trade. Don't skimp on feedline, cheap coax is like a leaky pipe. A preamp at the antenna sees a better signal than anything downstream ( loss in the coax degrades the signal) and is a good idea unless you have a strong local signal to deal with. Inexpensive preamps designed for weak siignal work get "blown away" in an environment where a half a megawatt local is a few miles away, they can't deal with the strong local and still amplify the distant distant station you want..it's like trying to hear a whisper across the room when someone is yelling in your ear. An antenna with a sharp pattern (good 'front to back') will often allow you to "null" a local signal by turning it and allow reception of a weak one (null steering). Often with UHF there is a hot spot on a roof, commercial installers will often take a meter up
to the roof and walk around looking for it. THere's more, but the foregoing is a start.

To update:

I ended up making a little fractal antenna out of aluminum foil and a laminating sheet for durability, and it works decently. I'm now in a larger population area, so we get about 10-12 channels, most in 720P. Not bad for being across downtown from the towers 10 miles away. We get to watch the Olympics in a few weeks, so I'm happy.
 
I should add, having directv and also an antenna, the signal coming over the antenna is actually sharper than the high-definition Directv signal. It's awesome.

But, I don't use the antenna because I don't watch the traditional networks hardly at all anymore. I could say much, but to keep this auto related, there is a channel on directv called "Velocity"... great programming for car guys.
