A little background first:

Model: LN46C610 46 in LCD 1080p/120hz purchased 10/21/2010.
Usage: TV/SD DVDs only-no Internet usage-no gaming-no blu-ray
Cable: Time Warner analog w/coax connections-no set-top box of any kind.
HD channels: Only the locals are in HD via the clear QAM tuner. All others are analog.
Settings: A small increase in brightness level, all other settings unchanged from delivery.
Price: $878 + tax + $80 for an additional 2 year warranty.

This is the first HD tv I've owned. My main reason for choosing it over the other brands
was the picture-every Samsung no matter where I saw it had a picture quality superior
to anything else that was on display. That is still true. I check out tvs whenever I get the
chance and so far, nothing I have seen at any price is superior to what I have now. A few
are just as good (and most of those are other Samsung) but none are better.

The HD picture-especially on a live broadcast- is near-perfect. I can't imagine what could be better. The color-clarity-contrast is ideal. I have 3 HD channels which have data streams of 1080i 16:9 and 2 with 720p 16:9 and I can't tell any difference between them.

The analog channels are noticeably different from the HD channels. The clarity is less distinct and the contrast not as good. However, I am not dissatisfied with them. Some of the analog channels display in a scissor-cut format (usually ESPN) and others in a pillar-cut but this does not concern me. The cost to me to have all HD channels would be approx $200 more per year than I am paying now. I will gladly spend that money on something else and I will not suffer with the analog channels one bit. Even if I had no HD channels I would be satisfied with the picture quality.

A lot of folks complain about the sound quality of a flat-panel. I'm not complaining. Yes...it could be better, but for the price there's nothing wrong with the audio. I don't need theater-quality audio and I'm happy with it. Anyone who does want theater-quality audio might want something more. That is certainly something you could decide for yourself and add later if you need to.

I used the supplied pedestal instead of hanging it on the wall. The panel will swivel if a different angle is needed. I don't, but its nice to have that choice available.

I liked the 46 in Samsung so well that I bought a 32 in 720p/60hz set for the bedroom (LN32C350D1D). On the HD channels, it is every bit as good as the larger set. I was pleased to find that both remotes will control both sets, even though they are not identical remotes.

If I needed a third or fourth tv for a low-usage reason, perhaps I might consider something else of lesser quality/price. But for everyday/frequent usage, I hope to have another Samsung just as good as this one.

My 3yr old Samsung 46" is in the process of failing. When turned on it clicks and doesn't show a picture or sound. Called samsung and all they will do is cut a work order to a repair shop at my expense. This is a common problem with samsung and they refuse to acknowledge their responsibility is supplying defective sets.
I have a washer/dryer and sound system and a refer all from samsung so it's not like I'm not a good customer.
I hope you have better luck.

Yup. A very common problem. We probably have nearly the same model set, 46 inch plasma. I had a repairman come to check it out at a cost of ~$80, and was told the part was the power supply that would cost "about" $400 to repair. I searched online and saw a lot of exact same issues discussed and the part that was the problem. More search got me the part number (used in many of their sets) and bought the genuine part online for $120 and fixed it myself. Having it repaired would have been foolish, since the repair cost was near 75% of the cost of a new comparable 46 in. TV. Since the LED sets are all the rage these days, the prices of LCD and plasma sets has really dropped, but not so much that a self-repair wasn't much less costly.

our now 2yo Samsung 46" sounds like a hamster is inside the thing when it turns on form a cold start.

our 1st 2yo 46" Samsung was swapped out after 2 years due to pink pixellation sporadically. That was a fiasco due to the parts catalog being wrong.

We bought the long warranty on both at Best Buy. I think what we actually purchased was a trade-up program. LOL

Our Samsung 40" LCD is still running great after 3 yrs.
Great pic quality and features (which they reduced after my particular model year).
Still love it.

Sound on any flat panel sucks. I use my main 2.1 audio set up whenever i watch something important, anyway, so we hardly every use the TV's speakers.

Samsung's panels all have really good picture quality but I would say their quality control is "okay" at best. I just don't know if I can see these newer sets lasting 10+ years like they used to. I am still sticking with plasmas as of right now. Maybe when my panasonic breaks I will jump on the LED bandwagon. Mainly just for how little electricity they consume.

This is a very easy fix if you're comfortable with using a soldering iron. Open the back of the tv and there are capacitors on the power board that are most likely bulging out. You can replace them for about 5 bucks. I can't remember the specs on the caps but I found them after a few min of google searching. I did this repair about a year ago and it's been fine since.

My one year warranty with my LG 42 inch LCD is almost up. LG keeps sending me a card to buy an extended warranty for another three years for 130 bucks. not so sure it's a good investment, everywhere I read says to avoid extended warranties. but this thread is freaking me out me a little.

Well, we bought a new 55" Samsung LED TV back in May-ish timframe when the 8 year old Sony Rear Projection bit the dust. My mom has a 32" Samsung in her room we've had for 3 years, and my little brother just got a 22" Samsung LED for his birthday to replace the 18 year old "Broksonic" 14" that came free with a computer they bought in 95.

If the unit has had no problems after one year, I'd skip the additional warranty. $130 does sound steep.

DrinkDuff: Big thanks for the link to the repair site. These old hands use to change mini relays etc on acft control panels so I may be able to handle the caps.
Will let you know how it goes.

Re: Bad Electrolytic Caps
It's amazing the amount of electronics that have failed due to these. I've had 3 PC PS fail for the same reason. A neighbor gave me a 5-yr old 17" iMac that was going in the trash. Not only had Apple orphaned it, but she was quoted $400+ for a new MB from a local shop. A little research revealed bad caps on the MB. I fixed it and now have (another) computer.

Just amazing. . . .

Well this AM before ordering the caps to fix my TV I called Samsung and had a conversation about my 3yr old set.

Samsung cut a work order to have the set repaired in my home at no cost to me.
When the repair is finished I'll bring you up to speed.
The saga continues.

That's why I always buy high quality power supplies, with Japanese or US Made Caps, especially the main caps.

I have had my Vizio 47 inch for almost a year. $700 and change. Bought at Costco they double the warranty to two years.
OTA channels are the best some are 1080. No complaints.

Well after changing the repair company, long story, they showed up with a bag full of capacitors, set up a work station and 40min later my set fired up.

Samsung in this case was right on top of good customer service.
