Disgusting ice cream truck.

Wife spotted a nice cream truck and made me turn around to go to it.

Soft serve not wrapped in paper which is normally ok with me.

Now I'm no germaphobe.... But.

Walk up to the truck and I got weird vibes. It does not look clean. Grease on the sides, scratches,dents etc. has not been washed in a long time.

Dude working it looked like he had not showered in a few days. His hands were very dirty.

I told my wife I will pass hoping she gets the hint.

She orders an ice cream any way.

Cash only. Guy takes the cash then proceeds to grab a cone without gloves or washing his filthy hands.

I elbo my wife but she is oblivious when she wants ice cream.

The ice cream machine jammed.

Guy then proceeds to stick his filthy finger up the spout the soft serve comes out trying to dislodge whatever is stuck in it.

I then told her get you money back we ARE leaving! She finaly listened and we left.

I told her that I'll find a gas station or a weinerschnitzel..... Gotta be cleaner than that guys truck.

Ick.

I'm old school, in that I have the mindset that exposure to dirt and germs (to a certain extent) is actually good for you. I never wear gloves when wrenching on cars, and I sometimes eat my lunch with filthy hands (although I do wash my hands when I visit the restroom, so I'm not a complete animal).

With that being said, health codes are a good thing, and it sounds like this guy probably has zero regard for any of them.

That is pretty disgusting what you were describing.

It's been several years since I've bought anything from an ice cream truck, but all of the ones I remember have only sold pre-packaged items, which I'm thinking must have a looser health code requirement than food trucks where they are actually touching the food.

I'm wondering if there is anyone you can report this guy to that would actually care. Sadly, I'm guessing probably not.

So anyways, how did the wife take it? Was she mad at you, or grateful?

I believe much of what you do. I don't want the guy touching our food looking like he did. He may have been picking his nose 5 minutes ago.

She was upset at me until I explained what I could see from my vantage point. She still wants ice cream.

I'd wait for the young lady to deliver ice cream, but warn her of the cameras and snakes on the porch. Avoid the mail boxes and odd people in old cars too.

We'd visit him at the Lewisburg State Penitentiary for several years.

Anymore, I blow right past buffets, potlucks, food vehicles, salad bars, and any other situation where the general public, or less than hygienic people will be handling my food. I realize I can't control everything... God knows what goes on in the back of my favorite restaurants, but I try to minimize my exposure to E-coli, etc. whenever possible.

The grossest thing I can think of: the chocolate fountain at Golden Corral. Imagine the possibilities.

I agree with the whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

But I avoid the whole food truck craze either way - no running water = poor hygiene. This from someone who grew up eating lunch in a field you had been working all morning. I am OK with natures germs. Modern humans - hard pass. Super bugs are real.

I throw caution to the wind with my favorite taco trucks. Never had cramps and septic problems. Yet.

I traveled for years in China I really don’t ever get that problem but ice cream guy story caused gagging

My bro-in-low ran a Mr. Softee truck in the summers for extra cash. At the end of all their runs, the guys would park the trucks in a warehouse overnight. All the ice cream was left in the machines on every truck, every night. Come the next late afternoon, when shifts start, the drivers come back. Trucks were ceiling to floor in roaches. They would drive the roach mobiles to the " washout station". Kinda like those outdoor car wash set ups. They would blast the melted ice cream and roaches out of the trucks with pressure washer hoses. No disinfectant ever used. Towel dry the inside and start making ice cream. He said whatever roaches didn't get out of the machines, they just got churned up with the ice cream. Never had a Mr.Softee again.
