Breyers is not what it used to be and it wasnt much then either. Taken over by conglomerates and watered down into junk.

Nothing is what it used to be. Any mass market product gives the mfg an opportunity to cut corners and make big returns since 90% of the consumers aren't paying attention.

If you buy small/local there is less chance of this.

Breyers has an 'All Natural' line with 4-5 ingredients in it. While its fluffy, I think it's better than the other ice creams in the same price range.

But for the best taste, you need to jump to the premium level.

Blue Bell is one of the best I've tasted. It's on the "must have" list when I go visit Texas.

I avoid Cold Stone. Not really to my tastes and it's way overpriced.

Funny you mention Breyers. Used to be my hands-down favorite but I told my Wife last week no more. Greens or Friendlys are the best at the grocery store.

And why can't I buy a 1/2 gallon anymore?!?!. I'll pay for it! I hate the "new" 1.5 quart containers.

Wall's in the U.K. were one of the largest producers of Pork products, However, they had a problem, as they noticed their sales dropped during the summer months. Their answer: They developed Ice cream made from Pork Fat!
It had the advantage that not many families in the 50's and early 60's had refrigerators and the new Wall's ice cream was slow to melt. The disadvantage......The taste.
But most kids of that era did not know the difference.

We have it here in NC too. Excellent!
I started reading this thread and immediately thought of Blue Bell. We just tried the Key Lime Pie flavor recently and it was the best ice cream I've ever had. Genuine lime flavor, little pieces of graham crust...

It's a little more expensive than the others but never has the phrase "you get what you pay for" been more appropriate.

Blue bell is great.

I heard it's got Dihydrogen Monoxide in it, though! Don't eat too much, that stuff corrodes steel! Also, the disaccharide sugars in it can cause some digestion troubles!

In the mid '70's I worked at New Zealand's biggest icecream factory - not as an icecream worker but as a mechanic in the workshop. The workshop was a 24 hr operation, and I did a rotating shift, early mornings and evenings. The delivery trucks were all Bedfords,TK or TJ,although we also maintained the intercity linehaul trucks too, they were Leyland,Mercedes,Kenworth and Fuso.

To get to the cafeteria for our break we had to walk above the icecream floor...checking out,and being checked out by the girls working the production line.On late shifts sometimes the girls would work overtime....and have their breaks with us.STD's went through the complex like wildfire. We had our own freezer in the workshop, next to the parts counter...great in summer, picking up an iceblock with your parts.

Our icecream is made from our great NZ milk, and I know real fruit was used because it would be unthawing in plastic bags on the floor.

Yeah, but everyone is different and I haven't been able to tolerate ice cream in decades. :)

I'm a blood type O+ non secretor. My type, the protein type, does good on animal proteins and saturated fat, but generally not sweet sugary foods such as ice cream.

Hmm never thought about that. I'm a O+ also but I've never had a problem with ice cream or cheese. But with milk if I drink it any other time than at a night big lactose intolerance problem. Ehh everything's bad for you might as well live while your here! (within limits of course)

...Did someone say Ice Cream?

I'm O+ also and animal products and Ice Cream are my mainstays for well over 40 years.

No tolerance problems, no high sugar, am a lean person.

Carry on with Ice Cream! Had 3 big bowls yesterday!

i got about halfway through that website and then though what does this molecule look like? and got it...

shows you the easy state of misinformation of the information age we live in. very refreshing.

We used to have an icecream brand called Gay Time - I haven't seen it for years. It's possible there may have been a name change....

I also heard Edys and Homemade brand is good.

There is a local store chain her called Quality Dairy. They have always had awesome ice cream and still do.
