Discuss a few otc synths.

Discuss these otc synths. Why you like them and which one you feel is better (via add pack,base oil,opinion,lab tests,uoa`s,experience,which oil is "stronger",etc). All of these brands in 10W30:

Valvoline Synpower
Pennzoil Platinum
Pennzoil Ultra
Quaker State Ultimate Durability
Castrol Syntec

I used pennzoil platinum 5w20 lasr winter, the engine develop a ticking noise, drain the oil and put mobil 1 syn, quiet like it ever been.

Castrol is good too, but a bit thick, maybe its just me.

I only try the Pennzoil, the engine is quiet with it. The Syntec somehow seems a bit behind on meeting current standard. By the way I like Mobil SN series, it is just feel more robust and also quieten the engine compared with SM version.

I have used all of the ones listed and would use any of the first 4 without question. Used Syntec when it first came out, (2008 maybe?) and thought the engine was a bit noisier.

When your dog is hungry, it would be as happy eating a hamburger as a steak. A car's need for motor oil is a lot like that.

Running PU in the van,engine seems to rev easier and maintains road speed much better.Gas mileage has no improvement though.

Syntec has been around since the early 1990's....for years, though, it was only available as a 5W-50.

This is how I rank these based purely on my subjective preferences:

1)Pennzoil Ultra
2 Pennzoil Platinum tied with Quaker State Ultimate Durability
3)Valvoline Synpower
4)Castrol Syntec ( not including GC as it is greeat oil)

The only outstanding (real)synthetic I ran was something in a boxy yellow bottle with red cap. I think it was a 5w-50 Maybe. IIRC, some additive MFG EXPENSIVE side oil brand, but it KILLS me I cannot recall - I thought I saved an empty bottle in the old workshed, but NO. Subject Car ('93 subaru loyale 1.8L 4 dr) ran great but leaked oil out of almost every gasket with this oil.

I have not run any SN synthetic, except M1 for 1 short OCI in the Subaru and I only drove the car around the block ONCE after the oil change. IIRC I thought the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 ORIGINAL FORMULA was decent for a PAO oil. Engine made TYP PAO VT and piston noises but acceptably so. Years ago, I ran SM (or SL?) PP in (??) and dumped it after 1K. The slickery magic seemed to fade into an also ran oil quickly - seemed heavily VII laden and showed shear tendencies.

Really, I don't see how this makes any sense at all. Are you saying that when your car has no oil it is "hungry" and doesn't care what kind of oil it gets? That's fair enough, but I think the question was essentially "what oil is best among these four?"

Mobil1 EP, Castrol Edge TFST & Pennzoil Ultra are the most excellent OTC oils out there. These oils in various applications fared very well, mostly from the point of view of extended oil drain intervals.

But I usually try to get one of these "especially" when they are on Sale
Quaker State Ultimate Durability, Pennzoil Platinum & Castrol Edge Syntec!

Valvoline never impressed me

I laughed when I was writing my first reply because we are deciding which super-oil we prefer in our car. These, and others are super-oils. Our cars don't know the difference, but we do. Whether I put Supertech conventional or PU, my car will run fine. If I feed my dog 6 oz. of hamburger or 6 oz. of steak he is just as happy. Same difference

If they are same price, this is my choice too. Otherwise, I buy the one on sale (plus rebate).
