Dino vs Syn w/in same grade and brand differences?

Has anyone compared the same grade conventional and synthetic of the same brand VOA's: ie 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum, Pennzoil conventional, Quaker State HP/ Quaker State Conventional, VSP/Valvoline conventional, Mobil 1/MC5K, etc?

From what I've noticed (some are obvious):

Syn- Grp 3 or 3/4 mix base oil, higher TBN, same Calcium & Zinc

Dino- Grp 2 or 2+ base oil, more Boron & Moly

There is more, but with the quirky search feature I have tried to gather VOA data to include in this post.

Was too much weight being placed on the base oil of syns to use lower moly and boron (pre moly price hike) than in dinos?
 
I call the maker of oils im interested in ,on the back of the bottle is a 1 800 number, its interesting to here their pitch, but u can call Nascar and see what they use,,its gotta be good, they run real cars..........not the junk we have to buy
 
That's an interesting question and you'd think if you compared Quaker State conventional to QS AD/HP the synthetic would have as much boron and moly, but maybe that's not the case.
 
What initially caught my attention about synthetics was a Havoline synthetic UOA that was good, but not impressive, and another Havoline Synthetic used oil analysis with zero moly. I've noticed since then conventional and synthetic used oil analysis of 4-5K mi OCI's that are commonly posted that syn used oil analysis are not that much better than the dino's of the same brand and grade; in some cases I think the dino's were better. I know that we preach that syns can go 7K+ OCI's but few BITOG'ers go beyond 5K mi as it appears from the syn used oil analysis that are posted.

Looking further into possibly why dinos used oil analysis are competitive to syns is when I noticed that moly and boron were commonly less in syns.
 
The big change in used oil analysis should start to show up between 5K-6K and beyond. Up to 5K a well formulated conventional oil will perform as well as the best synthetics (except in extremely cold or hot environments).

Just goes to show how warped the thinking we BITOGERS have. We will bust our rears to buy what ever synthetic is on sale for our 5K change, when all along we could have bought the counterpart conventional cheaper for the same 5K.

But some of us old diehards will buy a good synthetic and extend it out to 10K-15K.
 
I agree with you Johnny. I'm running dinos now and have a stash to hold me until I'm out of warranty on both cars. I'll probably follow your lead after they expire and go for the distance with a good syn. It's going to be hard to fight off the shorter OC addiction.

I think like Johnny said synthetics give cold flow and hot weather advantages. I'm still not sold on synthetics being able to go significantly longer OCIs. I know some of them can go longer but I would never try to double the OCI, but that's just me.

I'm still wondering about this conventional oils seemingly having a better additive pack.
 
Seriously though...Johnny has it right and Bill has always had it right. A good dino for 5k is perfection. Extreme cold or hot environments (and turbos) are where syns start to excel.

This is why I run syn from Dec-Apr for the winter and dino the rest of the year.
 
I don't think it's any better, just different. It's what ever additive package works best with what ever base stock is being used according to what ever chemist is formulating at the time and for what company.
 
There are three really good applications for synthetic lubricants:

1. Vehicle with a turbo.
2. Automatic Transmission.
3. Differentials, standard transmissions, and transfer cases.

And maybe the power steering unit.

No, I'm the one that opened up those can of worms. I thought since we seemed to be in total agreement I would just check you pulse on other issues. I just happen to like the above. Now, back to oil.
