Dino,Semi,Or Syn for 1st OCI in 4cyl 07 Accord?

OH BITOG GODS. My wifes accord OLM is @ 20% W/ 4700 mile on the odometer.I have dino pennzoil & PP 5w20 in my oil stash. I went to the dealer & asked what kind of oil they use for there OC which is QS syn blend 5w20. They will be doing the OC and i may provide the oil. Now do i want to do the 1st OC w/ Penn dino or QS syn blend or go striaght to the PP. My goal is to use the PP for the life of the car. What do you guys think?

The FACT is, it doesn't much matter. IF you are going to use a "synthetic", you should be able to go further on the subsquent OCI than if you use a "non-synthetic", UNLESS you have fuel dilution/air filtration/coolant leakage problems. Oh, and your car's OLM will not be able to tell what oil you are using. I use PP because I can get it for 1.99 per quart, and I run it as long as my car's warranty allows an oil to be run. Now that one car is out of warranty, I'll be running it until the UOA's say it's time to change.

Seriously, with that engine, it really doesn't much matter. Take care of it as the OLM says, and it will outlast the automatic transmission, that's a certainty!

Just use the dealer's syn blend and save your oil for later

Unless you're getting a discount for bringing your own oil, then I'd just use the regular Pennzoil first.

Whoa. Your maintenance minder says 20% with 4700 miles in FL?

Mine in an '07 CRV (same engine) says 40% with 7500 miles and thats with a bunch of short trips. And those short trips started with 50 below last January. I think I like your MM more than mine.

Stick with the dino in FL.

Hmm, mine is <30% with 6k. Lots of long trips, but a lot of rpm too. I'm doing Havoline dino for the 1st two changes, then synth...Havoline, of course.

I am running 3 quarts pen dino and 1.5 quarts PP 5W30 in my corolla since I have the oil. May go to 2.5 qrts dino, 2qrts PP.
-If you are doing straight PP i would say go to the max oci you can with the monitor. What does the manual say for oci's? or does the manual not state if you have an OLM? I have never had a car with a monitor so I dont know. My oci is 6month/5K, which for me and my commute will be 5K well before 6 month. Dino will work well for me with 5K changes but may every so often do 10K with syn.

Called the dealer today about discount for suppling my own oil. they said they knockoff $5. I am thinking of going dino for 1st OIC to continue the breakin process a little faster, then the semi syn on 2nd OIC, then the PP from there on out.

-assume you will be changing out when the olm reaches zero or a low number or will you go longer since it is a synthetic?

I will follow the OLM as it coincides W/ the 3 or 4 month OCI (NO matter what the milage is)routine i have been doing for years now. I will go extended OCI when its out of warranty.

I wish i had 7500 miles w/ 40% on the OLM! I will be lucky to hit 5000 before its time to change! It must be the heat & humidity here, As my 00 silverado can't get past 3 months 6000 miles w/ out the OLM going off, and thats 80% hwy, 20% city.

The manual says go by the OLM or 12 months which ever comes frist. I personaly like the OLM takes the geuss work out of it! lets you know when to change, which i like to do!

I hear ya! I only have 1060 miles on my current fill and I am ready to change it again. should be at 5K in about a month and a half

You can switch to the PP synthetic anytime, no need to gradually acclimate the engine by going dino, blend then synthetic. Many modern engines are filled with synthetic right from the factory, such as the Acura RDX turbocharged version of Honda's 4 cylinder.

If you want to use up your conventional Pennzoil first, no harm will be done, but there is really no need to wait.

I'm a little surprised that the dealer's normal fill is a Quaker State blend. Are you sure they aren't really using one of the ConnocoPhillips "synthetic blends" (Kendall, etc.)?

I was also alittle surprised when he told me they used Q syn blend. I am resonably sure they are not using another brand. From the time a walked in the door to buy the car to any request i have made, so far all my dealings with them have never left me w/ a bad feeling in my gutt.Always a striaght froward answer!They even went and got me an oil filter to examine.I usaully don't walk away from a dealership w/ out feeling bad.

I would like to continue the break in proceess for 1 or 2 more OCI. Thats why i left the FF in! I have in the past changed to syn after 500 miles and felt like it took the engines to 30000 miles before they were broken in all the way. You make a valid point about having a couple cheap OCI.

So far, I changed in my '07 Accord at 2000 and 6000 miles. I believe synth and dino are basicly the same as far as break-in, but like to change it for change's sake, so cheaper dino it is. I actually planned on using Havoline dino for my 2nd change, but it spewed out due to a missing oil filter gasket! At least it was only $10 worth of oil...a flush! Now I have the Havoline Semi-Synth in because it was the next cheapest oil in my inventory. Not looking to do ocis past 8k/4 months, not even with my PP or M1 0w-30. For the 1st year, it'll be Havoline Synth at 6k/3 months.

Heres where the new definition of syn messes me up.When i think of syn i think PAO group IV Not GroupIII. I might be wrong in my assumption but a PAO based oil will not allow for as fast a break in as a group II or III dino oil will.I think i will do 1 or 2 OCI's using the cheap dino for break in & won't feel bad for dumping it on 3-4 month/5000 mile OCI's.But i still can't wait to install the PP! I've come to the conclusion that i want one oil for all my apps & that is PP 5w20. Thats after i use up 1 more OCI of M1 5w20 for the civic & silverado in my stash, and the dino pennzoil 5w20 for the accord.

Yeah, all that and the fact that a G-III oil is not really chemically different than other petro-derived bases...other than purity, afaik. I noticed on my new TSX loaner, it takes 5w30. I forget if my '07 loaner TSx took it, but it's the same block etc, just different intake, maybe more compression, I dunno...but apparently 5w-20 will NOT cut it and it won't be back-speced for it either. I find this odd, because think about the fact somec ars are driven harder than others, what about a lightkly driven TSX on 5w-20 vs a hard driven Accord both with the 2.4, I dunno how wear would compare.

I didn't know the TSX came w/ the 2.4 i thought they had a V-6 in them. Very interesting about the different speced oil for each. I wonder what the new 08 accord ex's are speced for they have a 2.4 w/ 190Hp wonder if it's 5w20 or 5w30 that would put it pretty close to the TSX's output wouldn't it?
