I was at a Checker auto store lastnight and noticed they have havoline 5w30 or 10w30 for $1.79 a quart. Penzoil, and valvoline was $2.20 a quart. Is Penzoil and valvoline rated that much better that they need to increase the price?

Do a Havoline search here & the UOAs will smile-shock you., You can get a 4 quart jug at Wally World for around $5.69... ($1.35 qt).

Alot of folks here feel Havoline is better than most dinos.

I just got a case of 5w30 havoline for $1.28/qt. before a $2.40 mail-in rebate from Advance. I really like this oil and I got 2 of those nice UOA's of which T-7 spoke.

I tried so many different brands of dino oils that it drove my wife nuts! As far as I'm concerned Havoline is the best dino oil. All the other brands had oil usage to some degree. My cars use no Havoline at all, whether it is dino or synthetic Havoline. You can try other brands but, in the end it is a waste of money for me. Havoline is the best bang for the buck in my book.

I went to Pennzoil's and Havoline's and Kendall's and Mobil's (dino Mobil)'s websites.

I checked out all the numbers.

Havoline was a clear winner as far as flash point, ZDDP levels, and viscosity for grade (heavier than the others). Havoline also showed a better TBN.

Obviously you can print any data on your own website you wish, but if all of the numbers are accurate I think the Havoline is the oil to beat. (Chevron Supreme is basically the same oil, by the way). So if you can't get a deal on the Havoline get the Chevron.

I bought a case of the 20W50 Havoline for 12.96 at Advance Auto (after a $2.90 rebate). If you just want a few quarts it's on sale for 1.28 per quart, all weights.

I'm changing back to dino oil in my '94 Harley Davidson, and plan on using the Havoline 20W50.

I think so, especially in terms of bang for the buck.

I find Chevron even cheaper by a dime or so, and it's pretty much the same oil as Havoline. Usually .89-$1.09. I now use the High Mileage version, @ $2.00 a quart.

Posted a fairly decent UOA yesterday.

The base stock is better than most. It is much cleaner do to the refining method. It is the same method (by license) that Penzoil uses that was pioneered by Chevron. The additive packageis good too.

Conoco also uses the same refining method and it is used on all their brands, including Conoco, Phillips, Union, and Kendall. Conoco also packages it for Ford Motorcraft.

Where is the Chevron being sold (recently) for a decent price? The Walmarts around here are discontinuing it...I got some 10w-40 for $.25 each the other day. I don't have Costco near me..

Got back from the beach on Wednesday: in reviewing the Sunday paper I found that Schucks (Hagan, Krager, etc. ?) just had a coupon for a case of Chevron at $0.99 per quart with a $4.80 mail-in rebate = $0.59 for the "normal" grades (5W- & 10w30, 10W-40 & 20W-50) as well as their DexonIII ATF.

You know, at $3.54 (+ half the price of a stamp) for 6 quarts of THIS oil one can easily justify a 3K OCI as being both co$t-effective AND very good preventive maintenance, eh?

That is an excellent deal...for you. Those stores are west side only, they aren't anywhere near me.

uh oh, you got me thinking now......I just did this oil change with the Halvoline jug.....I thought It was 5 qts....It appeared the same size/shape bottle as the Pennzoil that I am used to seeing.

My Explorer takes 5 qts exactly, I would hate to think I made such a careless error.

Somone fill me in....and yes it was 6.50/jug

Let me fill you in: Check your dip stick.

LOL. I almost made that mistake years ago at Kmart and nearly walked through the checkout with 4 quart Castol Syntec jugs(Before I knew better). I know they come in 4 and 5 quart jugs. Hopefully you got a 5 quart jug.
