I have a 05 Chevrolet Colorado I will be running conventional oil. My choices are Castrol GTX 5w30, Havoline 5w30, Mobil Clean 5w30, or Valvoline 5w30. I plan on 4-5k change intervals. When the truck gets over 75k I will switch to high mileage oil. By the way the engine is the 3.5 5cyl.

I recommend out of those choices Havoline, Castrol GTX, Mobile Clean, Valvoline. In that order. Also recommend useing your OLM. But 5K changes are fine.

That DOHC engine would see better start-up/heat protection with a coating of synthetic oil. A few of us here use Mobil 1 in our Colorados/Canyons. Recommend staying with the non-ADBV AC Delco PF-61 filter also. I have-yet to find another filter brand without the ADBV for that vertical mounted oil filter system.

Just my two cents....

If I were to run a semi-synthetic, what would I do after 75k when the engine is "high mileage"? Would I keep running semi-synthetic or switch to a high mileage oil? I have heard high mileage oil is part syn anyway.

I only know of valvoline maxlife. Which is a PAO blend.

That 3.5 L5 Colorado engine has been showing very little wear metals with the older, regular Mobil 1... even at 10K OCIs. At 75K with normal 4-5K OCIs on top-tier dinos or any SM blends, that engine will be just beyond the baby bottle vs an engine that needs Geritol.

Don't use seal swellers/leak removers/consumption doctors found in high mileage oils unless needed.

GM will tell you you need a spec oil, something to do with the variable valve train. Not sure I buy it but somehting to consider. We have a small fleet of those things at work and the mechanics did order the right oil (reluctantly). Its a unocal semi-syn, 5w30 I think.

What spec are you talking about the only one that I know is the GM6094 for cold start pumpablity in which just about any SL/SM dino does. Maybe valvoline does not.

The Havoline, Castrol GTX, Mobil 5000 will do you just fine.

It's start up protection is just as good as Syn unless your at 40 below zero.

Then, if your at 40 below, you have other problems to worry about!

Use the dino and enjoy the outfit!

I don't see the point of "needing" to run a high mileage oil just because it gets over 75k.

I have 150k+ on a 3.2L SOHC Isuzu engine, and I'll admit to running two rounds of Havoline high mileage oil in the last year, just for curiousity - truck is a long time straight Havoline 10w30 user for 140k miles.

I did like the HM 10w30 Havoline as it was close to a 40wt; but decided the truck really didn't need it as it never burns oil, doesn't leak, etc. and I didn't want to start any leaks by using an oil claimed to condition the seals.

Supposedly the conditioners are not supposed to cause leaks, but you just never know.

Recently, in the last 1k miles, my mechanic did a free oil/filter change and threw in Havoline blend 5w30, gotta tell you, I'm LOVING it!

I spent the majority of the summer under either 5w-40, 10w-40, or High mileage 10w30 (low 40wt) - which allowed a bit of drag on the engine.

I do a LOT of heavy mountain highway driving - living in Colorado, and I've heard a lot about xW-30wt's shearing to a 20wt under heavy use. And this truck has also seen it's share of idling, which also thins out the oil.

But I don't believe a Blend is as susceptable to shearing down as fast, so I'm sticking with the Havoline blend, 5w30 for winter, and 10w30 for summer - but only because I can NOT find ANY 5w30 blend anywhere!!

Truck has not used a drop and the idle smooths out faster in cold temps.

What about the extreme heat 95 degrees in the summer. Will the dinos mentioned above protect as well as a synthetic?

I go to Vegas from Salt Lake City and in the summer it's EASY 110+ in the shade.. On the freeway it's well over that.

Here in Utah, it's easy 90+ degrees from May till Sept everyday.

I've run 5w30 conventional and drive for hours on I-15 and the used oil analysis, engines and even opened up a few engines and all is fine. Good compression, passes smog, lasts many miles, clean engine and money in your pocket..

Dino will protect your engine just fine.

If you follow the OLM (or change it out every 6 months) and use a good oil like we have noted above, you'll be in great shape.

Take care, Bill

I think a synthic blend will work will.

I really don't recommend high miliage oil as we did that in my sisters camry recently with 160k and its using alot more oil then the plan old dino.So she will go back to plain old dino Castrol again. It has the 2.4 4cyl in it.

I agree with Havoline, as always, but if you're running it in high temps it won't hurt and may help to mix in a quart or two of Delo 15w40. If you want a syn blend then I'd say make your own, either by adding a quart of M1 or, better, a quart of Redline because it is very strong in additives and has an ester base, both good things to have in an oil. One quart out of four will probably give you more actual synthetic than most, if not all, OTC blends.

I agree no need to use a high mileage oil until and unless your engine starts telling you it wants it, either by leaking or burning significantly.

I was thinking of a syn blend maybe Valvoline Durablend, or Castrol Syntec Blend but from what I understand the differance between the blends and dinos for a 4k OCI is minimal at best. Still leaning toward Havoline 5w30 conventional.
