Am I crazy?

I have been using Valvoline Synpower 5w30 and have been getting a consistent 20.5 mpg. I decided to try Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and the mpg has seemed to drop to 19.5 My vehicle is a 05 Chevrolet Colorado. I had the same thing happen to my last car 05 Honda. I think I must be nuts.

While it's possible, due to small differences in viscosity and other variables, it's highly unlikely. Mobil 1 Extended Performance GF-4 is now 11.0 cSt however so it could be viscosity related.

What do you think about Castrol Syntec 5w30 for 5K to 6K OCI? I believe the cst is 9.7

Meeze; Valvoline Synpower contains a more sophisticated friction modifier than Mobil 1 Extended Performance ,thats whats giving you this slight increase in mpg. BTW Durablend also contains the same friction modifier.

rapid47 would you be so kind as to give us the name of this sophisticated FM that Valvoline uses. Could you also provide the name of the FM that Mobil uses and discuss the differences between the two?

I don't see how one can compare MPG between any given oil, gas, etc. Unless one drives the exact same route, exact same speed, exact same weather conditions, same ammount of traffic, etc. how can one really compare?

My vehicles have been getting 2 MPG better recently. I'm assuming it's due to: more highway miles (26 mile round trip to take the kid to school), and much cooler weather (60s-80s vs 80s-100s).

If the change is decided over just one OCI, could it be that not enough time/use has allowed for the additive chemistry to fully establish itself? That's probably not the case, and could fallback on thinking viscous losses would be more likely the case if maintaining hydrodynamic conditions. How about relations in VI?

I know it is not a very scientific study, just an observation. The only reason I question it is because it (Mobil 1) seemed to give the same decrese in MPG in my last car.

One out of three people are crazy. If you are in the company of two normal people, then you're the one. Oh, and try more than a couple of tanks of fuel to get an average miles per gallon.

Ive lost gas milage when using Amsoil Series 3000 but i like how well it keeps the valve train clean. Ill be changing the oil to Series 2000 and maybe get my gas milage back to what it was and to get the engie perpaired for the winter.
