Canon SD200 versus A520...which one is better if they're both the same price?

Won't be taking anything bigger than 8X10.

TIA,
Mike

Michael, there is a website, steves digicams, that has sample photos and reviews of about every digital camera made. The Canon A520 blows away the Canon SD200 from my visit to that site. Spend the money if you can afford to and get the better camera.

Just bought a Canon A610 for the wife to replace her 3 year old Canon S45.

Impressive is the word. Got it for $259 incl 1 gig SD card at newegg.

It's the right size, has an excellent movie mode and takes excellent photos.

Simple to use and quick to start up.

Uses AA batteries!

I like Compact Flash memory better than SD. My Nikon uses it and much easier to use. It's cheaper too!

But more cameras are going to the Sd it seems.

I'm going to get a A620 for my self as a carry around camera soon.

My 3 cents, Bill

CF is the best, SD is not too bad, but memory sucks big time due to monopoly and their "security" feature eating up precious memory space at your expense (advertised 256mb is not really 256mb usable due to security overhead).

SD and CF are about the same price now. The only absolute benefit of using CF over SD is if you want to use micro-drive, CF has more selection and is much bigger than SD in this area.

But, do you really need 10GB for your 5MP digital camera?

Bill, good deal on that A610.

I just picked up the A520 for about $150 plus tax from Circuit City for my sister. She wanted something relatively basic and looking at all the reviews, I hope she'll be fine with it.

Personally, I'm still using my old A20, so I was actually quite dumbfounded by all the features of the A520 when I played around with it a little bit. I guess one needs to crack open that owner's manual once in a blue moon.

Also, if you guys know of any good deals on high speed 512MB and larger SD cards, please do share.

Thanks everyone for their feedback. I would buy an A520 in a heartbeat due to its features, but the following concerns me:

quote:

Unfortunately, the A520 was a little lethargic in single-frame mode when using flash. When powered off, it took 3.7 seconds to awaken before we could snap off our first picture, and it provided shot-to-shot times of 2.5 seconds without the speedlight. The average 7-second wait between flash exposures seemed much longer, however, and sometimes stretched to 10 seconds or more when we shot several consecutive flash shots.

Canon touts this camera's zoom-flash mode, which changes the flash angle to match the zoom setting. Even so, flash range is no more than 11 feet at the wide-angle setting and about 7 feet when using the telephoto (ISO unspecified)--about the same as other cameras in this class. Flash coverage was even, and exposures were good, however, and you can adjust the output from one-third to full power. The red-eye-prevention feature didn't do a lot to prevent red eyes, though.

The 1.8-inch LCD washes out under direct illumination and displays the usual ghosting during camera or subject movement. The optical viewfinder gives you a reasonably big, bright perspective. It represents an acceptable alternative for everyday viewing, except when you're shooting close-ups, as it suffers from parallax problems that make composition difficult.

Second, the A520 is based on a legacy technology, versus the current generation technology with the SD200. The sensor used in the A520 is of the Digic I sensor, versus the Digic II in the SD200. Based upon the reviews, the models equipped with a Digic II processor have little or no shutter lag at all.

I guess it all boils down to:
1) Do I really need 4mp.
2) Are AA batteries really that important to me if I can buy replacement battery packs for the SD200 from the EBay for $10.
3) Does legacy technology bother me.
4) Do I really need an adjustable apature and shutter.

TIA.

go to buying guide -- side by side.
select the cameras you want to compare.

I ended up going with a canon S2 IS, has 10x optical zoom, 5 megpixel, takes excellent video at 640x480 30fps with audio.

1) i've read 3mp is the minimum or the standard for good picture resolution, don't remember what size though probably 4x6. My 5mp S2 gives me 8"x6" pic size at 1600x1200 pixels high resolution.

2) how dependable is ebay for batteries? Mine takes 4 AA, and I bought energizer rechargable Ni-MH at walmart with charger for $12. The newer batteries, lithium I think, are more expensive, can't be replaced with alkaline batteries I don't think. They may last longer between charges, but cost more of course. I can use AA alkaline if I want (as a backup on travel) but they won't last as long as 2200 or 2500 mA-hr ni-mh batteries.

Michael, I have the Cannon SD200. Excellent camera. Love it. It takes great pictures of oil molecules. Just kidding. Seriously, good camera.

Those pictures you posted for me of Long Wood Gardens were using that.

Your talking to someone who has almost 400 quarts of oil in his family stash!

This is the main reason why I sold my wife camera which worked great and took excellent photos for the A610. The Digic II is TONS faster. Turns on NOW and very little lag.

Your better off buying the 2500 MA batteries from Wal-Mart. I've been on Ebay since 1998 and some of the batteries I've bought are crap. They don't hold a charge too long to falling apart for OEM type batteries.

I buy the 2500 ma for $17 for 8 at Wal-mart and they last a long time in everything I use them in.. (Camera, Flash, GPs, Scanner, Radio, Amateur Radios and LED Flashlights..)

You guys are Correct, www.dpreview.com is the Best . Phil has made his site #1 in my book too!

Take care, bill

$36.99 for 1 gig SD card

$37 plus $5 shipping is a DEAL for 1 gig SD card name brand lifetime warrenty.

My wife has the 512meg version of this card and all is well with movies and photos.

Take care, Bill

Thanks, Bill. Unfortunately this isn't high speed. I'm looking for something 32x or higher - it'll be for an FZ5 which apparently can write at this speed.

The cheapest thing I'm finding right now is a 1GB Corsair 40x for about $55.

I think I may just go with what's onsale after Christmas at Fry's, it may be cheaper that way. Right now, I'm interested in getting myself a set of slicks for the bike.

After another Camera thread, I bought an A520 off e-bay, for $120 (Oz) less than it was in the shops, got a 256meg card for half the cost in the shops, and NiMH batteries and charger for half the shop price also.

The camera bag I could get locally was the same price as ebay.

I've been VERY happy with it.
