Hi all,
I was at a farm show yesterday and talked to a mobil rep there and told him it is hard to find delvac 1 for my dodge cummins. He told me that subject came up recently and his research said that delvac 1 and mobil 1 truck and suv speced out pretty much identical.
That would be great if I could use mobil 1 truck and suv as I can get that easily, I would like to know the thoughts on this here and if its a good choice for my engine.

I think there is a general consensus here that the Cummins can run just about any oil successfully. There is also a general consensus that Delvac 1 and T&SUV are pretty much the same. Look in the Used Diesel Oil Analysis, and you'll find lots of Cummins reports with Delvac 1, 5w-40 T&SUV, and many other brands of oil.

I use T&SUV, with some Redline 15W-40 in my 2.7 CDI Mercedes Turbo Diesel with good success.

Speced out is not the same as having the same base oil composition.

I am not convinced they are one and the same.

Delvac-1 is CI-4+ rated,, Truck and SUV is only CI-4 rated. This indicates that there is some diffence in the product.

Too many people believe that the few elements that get tested for in a oil analysis give the composition of a fluid. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I totally agree with both you guys. I said there is a general consensus that they are pretty much the same. That entails a lot of latitude. Pretty much the same.......sure. Exactly the same..... probably not.

I've done my own home experiment with Delvac and T&SUV. They both look the same. They both pour the same whether at room temp or in the freezer. They both smell the same, and yes.......I hate to admit it but.......they both taste the same : ) But are they really the same ? If guys as smart as yourselves think they are not the same.......they are not the same.

Mola and Fowvay, can u tell me the differences? Would you recommned useing the truck and suv oil in my engine? And if not why?
Thanx for all your answers.

I ran them both in my Pathinder and the TSUV had rather high volatility compared to the Delvac 1, and slightly higher wear metals.

I believe they are both good lubes. Run them both and compare them with good Used Oil Analysis.

Different engines respond differently to certain oils.

"Delvac-1 is CI-4+ rated,, Truck and SUV is only CI-4 rated"

FowVay, according to the API homepage T&S is CI-4+ rated as well. I don't think it is a typo, but what do I know?

Its going to be academic as 5w-40 Truck and SUV with the CI-4 rating will be discontinued this month. Mobil will be replacing it with a 5w-30 Truck and SUV that will not carry the CI-4 diesel ratings (in other words, a spark engine oil) and a new product called Turbo Diesel Truck. No info as to whether the "Turbo Diesel Truck" will be as widely distributed as the current Truck and SUV, or what it will cost.

Extreme-Duty, according to the Mobil product data sheet and the bottle of oil that sits on the shelf, the T&SUV is not CI-4+ rated.

As k1xv commented, it's a mute point starting in April as the T&SUV is being replaced.

Your both correct that this is a moot point. The real issue for me was that T&SUV cost almost half as much as Delvac 1.

Delvac 1 reportedly had better soot handling for longer drains, but you could still be ahead using T&SUV in shorter drains because of it's cost.

Luckily I bought all the 5 qt jugs my Wal-Marts had when it was still on the shelves. I've got 20 jugs or more in the basement along with 20 qts of Redline 15w-40.

I just posted my first UOA in the used diesel analysis. Granted it's only one UOA, but the numbers look good to me.
