We recently got 2 new vehicles in the family, daughter bought a new 2025 Jetta with the 1.5T and we just picked up a 2020 Equinox with the 1.5T. The Jetta will be getting the Mobil 1 ESP X2 with the VW 508 00 approval and the Chevy of course wants a Dexos1gen3 oil aka Mobil 1EP. These engines are similar enough that their lubrication requirements should also be similar I'd think. No idea what was used in the Chevy in it's first 38k but going forward would the ESP X2 be a stouter choice?

This graph that was posted a while ago shows that everything is better about 508 00 I think...

esp x2 doesnt have full api SP, and no dexos 1gen3
so if that bothers you I'd use something else in the equinox.

its a good choice for vw508.

Maybe the question should be what does the ESP X2 have that the Jetta needs it (of course during warranty) and what does Dexos have that the Chevy needs it? Trying to learn something, both cars have 1.5T GDI engines. Do they need different additives or formulations?

vw 508 is pretty strict
the esp x2 would be fine in the engine of the chevy. but it doesnt meet the chemical requirements of api sp.

Looks like it says it does on the bottle.

It passes the engine tests, but not the chemical tests. Some of the additive levels are outside of what a licensed API SP oil is allowed in that grade. That’s why it can’t carry the donut and starburst.

This really is irrelevant though. If it can pass the engine test requirements that’s all that matters. It’s a great oil.

Get better glasses? ;)

not API SP.
Its suitable for use in the engine but not API SP

notice no starburst API SP label etc.

This is m1 esp 5w30 which is API SP

My sister got a 24 jetta with the 1.5. I plan to use esp 0w-20 until warranty is over. I’ll switch to esp 5w-30 after since that is what I run in my b58 and b46.
