Did the Dealer use the wrong oil?

We have a 2016 Nissan Rogue SL AWD with the 2.5 liter engine. As part of the 2 year no cost maintenance plan we got with it, that includes oil changes every 5K. At 4800 miles I took it in and the manual as well as the oil cap state 0w/20 synthetic oil only. When I picked up the car, the service ticket said "drain and fill oil, filled with 5 quarts conventional 5w/30 bulk oil and replaced filter". Im a little concerned that a dealer would not follow the manufacturer recommendations when it comes to oil. Is this something I should be concerned about or let it go another 5000 miles and have the 0w20 put in next time? I already had a lengthy discussion with the dealer and they refuse to drain the 5w30 and replace with the proper oil.

I'd contact Nissan's customer service 800 number and open a ticket with them. In the end, though, you may not want the dealer touching the car again anyway, if Nissan forces them to do the job again.

Either way, I'd do the oil changes yourself from now on if you can.

I'd take them to small claims court. Just get a quote from Jiffy lube for a 0w20 syn change and multiply it by 4 OCIs or whatever you get over two years.

Since you're getting it for "free", there's no prepaid price you can have refunded, so you'll have to argue it's built into the price of the car. They'll pay the $200 to get you off their backs. Take the money and run.

They'll probably meathead up your new car other ways, like rotating the tires to do a brake inspection and gunning them on with too much torque from the impact wrench.

I picked up a couple 5 quart jugs of M1 EP 0w/20 at Autozone over the weekend on clearance for $10 each. I normally do my own oil changes but I figured with 2 years of free maintenance, let someone else do it, I guess the only way to make sure its done properly is to do it myself! I have opened a ticket with Nissan, haven't received a response from them so far.

My buddy has a nissan and the dealer does the same thing. Owners manual even states 5W-30 or 5W-20 is fine but the OCI has to be shortened it says.

Its nice that Nissan gives the owners that choice. My buddy said a dealer oil change for syntheic 0W-20 was about $90 and in his words "too expensive to maintain" so he went with the 5W-30 route.

I just pulled up the owners manual for your vehicle. You need to read it again because conventional 5W-30 is allowed and it maintains the factory warranty. Enough already.

No, the dealer is not going rogue here, strictly speaking anyway:

From the 2016 Nissan Rogue manual (U.S. cars):

However, I'd prefer 0w-20 in the winter, with 5w-30 in the summer. Full synthetic all the way too. Any brand oil, full syn. Fram Ultra or Purolator Boss oil filter.

I'm particular about this stuff I know, but I think 0w-20 will be better on cold days, both for initial flow and fuel economy. Treating a new car to the best. I'm a little OCD about it though.

Unless your agreement says they will do full synthetic oil changes, it looks to me (from the manual) that the 5w-30 is considered ok. If you don't like that, don't go for the "free" changes. I persoanlly turn down these "free" offers because I can do BOTH my cars in my driveway in about 30 minutes and would prefer to not have to drive to the dealer and drink their [censored] coffee waiting while some guy tinkers with my car.

and according to the manual, no, they did not use the wrong oil. Just let it go. Other than in winter, the 0-20 is beimng spec'd to "save gas". Not an issue and you'll get no where with Nissan.

I guess since the 5W-30 conventional is acceptable, I'd ignore it. I would rather have the 0W-20 synthetic for the upcoming winter.

This is why I'll just stick to doing oil changes myself. First oil change on my 2015 F-250 was free but I did it myself with Valvoline SynPower & a Fram Ultra. I'm guessing they would've used Motorcraft Blend & filter at the dealer but I don't know that for sure. Since conventional meets specs they might use it. I want at least a blend since this truck does nothing but tow. Only way you'll get what you want is if you do it yourself.

Conventional oils really good these days we need to stop living in the motor oil 1970s. The syn is probably better when it is really cold though. I have been to Indiana and winters do get brisk.

I wish my 2015 Honda's manual contained common sense verbiage like this.

I can absolutely guarantee that they put the "conventional 5W30 oil is acceptable" wording into the manual as dealers would raise a stink if they had to give away synthetic oil changes on a non-premium car such as a Nissan.

You don't have a leg to stand on as the dealer is apparently following the manual. Based on your location, I would change out the 5W30 and go with a synthetic 0W20 for the upcoming winter. Have them do your summer change with 5W30, and then next fall have them do your winter change with your own provided 0W20 synthetic oil.

on your F250 it would have been MC Oil and Filter. I'm not sure they stock anything else other than MC.

Bulk dealership oil at a Ford dealership can be anything they can get the cheapest thats still SN GF-5 oil. My local Ford dealership pushes Pennzoil's entire line a lot. They still have Motorcraft, but who knows what mystery brand-of-the-day bulk oil they buy for cheap.

Exactly. I'm not sure what my dealer uses but I don't think it is Motorcraft.

Dealer used what is less expensive for them, and (unlike some!) used an oil that will maintain the warranty and is approved. Drive on, sir.
