did she make a good choice? (MB/Infinity)

one of my wife's friends had narrowed down her car choices for a long time, and finally pulled the trigger on a MB CLK convertible (the v-6) ....her other contender was Infinity M-45...
Now she's wondering if she made the right choice...

what do you guys think?

Honestly if it is new or under warranty, I wouldn't care.

I have to say, at the local Pull-A-Part, there are no Benzes, but there are TONS of Infinities...ones less than 10 years old too and they are not wrecked.

Gosh, Mercedes Benz's are very unreliable. ConsumerReports show them to have bery spotty reliability records. Don't know about the Infinity though.

But why is she going to spend big big $$ on a car? And a gas guzzler at that? And what huge dent will that make into her retirement funds.

She's not very smart. If she were smart, she'd buy a new small car, put the $$ into an investment, and be more mindful of the environment.

Cars as fashion, as a way to make the statement "I am successful" is so shallow, and void of responsability.

Yes, I drive a $12,800 car, and no I am not poor, and no I am not the jealeous type, and yes, I could buy any car under $250,000 cash if I wanted to. It's about being responsible, and doing the right thing, and yes, I realize I don't know this woman.....hahaha

Maybe she just likes those cars? And why exactly is she obligated to buy a $12K econobox? It isn't like she is buying a car that will billow smoke.

A car is a very emotional, important purchase for many people. For many people, myself included, a "responsible" econobox is not what they want. If you do, that is great. Me personally, I would destroy a car like a Fit in one weekend if I tried to take it the same places I took my truck.

How can you compare a MB v6 conv to Infinti V8 sedan. I would have gotten the M45. But girls look better in the MB

I used to think MB's were unreliable too but my C280 has been very solid and the newer CLK's have almost all the kinks worked out.

lovcom- wow, aren't we judgmental? You're right, you don't even know this person and yet you feel entitled to make wild, baseless claims about her motivation behind purchasing a certain vehicle. For all you know, this woman could have major $$$ in her bank account such that she can easily afford to purchase these vehicles and have more than enough in her savings/retirement.

You're obviously not a connoisseur when it comes to buying a vehicle for yourself. It sounds like you are drawn to any basic, reliable, cheap transportation. Point A to Point B. Well guess what? That's not true for everyone. Some people prioritize creature comforts, build quality, safety, power, and gadgets as much or more than the things that draw you to a vehicle. And this may have nothing to do with "making a statement" or "fashion".

That's great that you prioritize your savings/retirement/the environment highly on your list when buying a car. Good for you. All I know is, if a car like your econobox got into an accident with a Mercedes or an M45, I know which vehicle I'd want to be in. All the money in the world won't pay for that kind of safety in retrospect. What would the "smart" choice be then?

well; she is a pharmacist. and she's not dumb. she got out of college 1 yr ago. makes $140,000 a year, and had an old Taurus which was falling apart with about 250k miles on it...
I'd say she deserved to own a "nicer" car after all the hard work in college she put in, to become a pharmacist...although some thought she should have waited a bit...and I think she really did NOT have her mind set on a convertible..i have to ask her again why she went with it...

My wife and I will become pharmacists soon (wife in 6 mo., me in about 2 yrs)...I sort of know what I want, but I don't think I will buy it just after 1 yr when I get out of college...
