Just wanted to post because this really grinds my gears as it is borderline elderly abuse/scamming.

The mother (late 70's) of my significant other has a decent low mileage 2012 Infiniti EX35, good condition and has only had a couple small issues over the years. Since its an older Infiniti it goes to her "I know a guy" who works on pretty much anything with wheels but doesn't specialize in any make or model. She took it in for routine oil change before a 400 mile round trip down to Florida and was told radiator was cracked as it was spraying coolant on the engine. Due to time crunch for the road trip she was not able to have him do the ~$1300 radiator replacement so was given dire warnings of driving it to Florida and back as it might run out of coolant during the trip.

I didn't know this until the car returned from Florida after the first round trip and I called shenanigans and wanted to take a look. Popped the hood - coolant bottle is at full mark with the blue Nissan long life fluid (some crust around the cap) I opened the high pressure cap (car had sat for over a day at this point so was stone cold) and all looks clean and full of Nissan blue. I see the coolant spray on the engine cover and trace it back to the radiator bleed screw on the drivers top of the radiator. Looks like someone cracked the screw while it was hot, let it spray a bit then closed it back up. We wiped down the bleed screw and the spray on top of the engine cover and it has not returned even after the same round trip to Florida, coolant level in bottle still at max. I have advised other half and mother to skip over this mechanic moving forward but to get quotes to have coolant flushed as it is due if not slightly past due (10 years is interval on Nissan long life coolant). Infiniti dealer wants $150 for a coolant flush which is not bad at all, I am going to recommend them inquire about a brake fluid, trans fluid and rear differential fluid change as well as none of them have been touched on this car.

On a positive note they both now agree this mechanic they have trusted previously can no longer be trusted and are just as pissed off as I am. I have advised the Infiniti dealer will probably come up with a laundry list of recommended repairs on a 11 year old car but I have much more faith they won't create urgent issues to make a buck. Unfortunately it appears there is not a single independent Nissan/Infiniti shop in Atlanta so it either the dealership or an all Japanese makes specialist.

Watch out for your friends and family. I'm glad this was brought to my attention as I'm sure the radiator replacement would have happened if I had not caught wind of it and checked into it.

Good looking out for the family 🤌

Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon scenario, and I've had to be the pragmatic voice of reason
It's not always fun, and people are often hesitant to listen to you vs the "professional" or "I've been using them forever"

Places like this give the business a bad name, and often send people running towards a new car unnecessarily IMO

The "I've been using him forever" also applies here, it makes me wonder what else she has been taken for over the years as I'm guessing this is not the first time. Thats the past though and bringing it up won't do a dang bit of good so I'm just going to let that be, she knows now so that is the best course of action right now.

**Sorry to be venting. I am seeing so much red right now with this.

My mother who's in her mid 70's forgot that BMW takes care of her oil changes for free.
I really hope you stepped in to assist.

There is a huge disconnect in that age range of current day state of affairs versus how things used to be, there is an ingrained level of trust there that turns out very badly when they run into the wrong characters. Don't even get me started on the text/email scams that seem to hit both my parents and my partners mom much more frequently than us.

An OEM radiator is $150.00 and coolant would be another $150.00 at most. A first time amateur mechanic can do the remove and replace job in 2 hours. I'm trying to understand the $1,300.00 quote.

If the price of the part and coolant were marked up 100 percent, that would be $600.00. Shop supplies and new hoses and clamps could be $150.00. Two hours labor $300.00. Sales tax $100.00. Still can't add up to $1,300.00.

I put a new OEM radiator in my 1997 Lexus LS400 this morning for $200.00 total.

It was this "mechanic" trying to scam a little old lady who is too trustworthy and is not knowledgable about cars outside putting gas in them and taking in for oil change when the sticker says. I told my other half I bet if she took the bait they probably wouldn't have even replaced the radiator, just clean it up and flush the fluid and walk away with a $1100-$1200 profit.

As we speak it is heading back down to Florida for the 3rd time, we checked the coolant and still at max and no dried up coolant spray has returned.

Ya well living 3hrs away one can only exert so much influence.

Nothing wrong with going to the dealer, only had excellent experiences with Infiniti dealers over the years.
And an Infiniti dealer may not be cheap, but they will never try to scam you.

On the other hand, since you are in Atlanta you have access to T3, which has a sterling repuation and specializes in Nissan/Infiniti and Toyota/Lexus

Thank you very much for the recommendation for T3! Definitely going to check them out next week.

I’ll say this. We seem to have replaced a disproportionate number of those EX radiators compared to other vehicles with that engine family; they’re problematic.

And they’re kind of a pain to do.

Not really an unfair rec for an EX of that age.
