How dumb was that? {I had it done & forgot to tell my Mechanic to change the water pump too nor did he remind me of it}. My truck is has one of those Japanese 4 bangers that is labor intensive for water pump repairs & the timing belt has to be removed, pullys too ect...
My question basiclly is this, does everyone change thier w.pumps @ the 60k timing belt replacement interval & how long does the average water pump last { I do a flush every year & use distilled mixed with green stuff antifreeze }
Thanks for any replys !

Sounds like a Toyota. I just did my timing belt at 213,000 miles and replaced the pump just cause the gaskets and o-rings where seeping. The old pump looked like it could of gone another 213,000 miles. Wait till your 120k replacement and consider it then and if you don't at least replace the gaskets and seals and at that time you may consider replacing the tensioner and the Crank and Cam oil seals... Cheap insurance against future problems.

Thanks for the replys,
So far from what I've learned as far as changing the W.Pump @ the 60k mile timing belt change interval is " some do & some dont "..
Well, I hope I luck out & she makes it to the 120k mark when the next belt goes on..!!!
Time will tell but if I break down due to the WP failing I'll be doing this !

I wouldn,t worry about it I hardly ever hear of them going out before 120K, My 2 vehicles call for a timing belt change at 105K so I will go ahead and do the water pump then but 60K don't worry about it.

I took the chance and postponed my water pump replacement on my last 60,000 mile timing belt interval and it came back to bite me. My water pump seized up at 108,000 miles and nearly cost me some serious cash.

From now on my pump is getting change when I have the engine disassembled for the belt.

I think my rule of thumb is " if you have to pay someone else to do it, change the pump" If you do it yourself, "don't fix it if it ain't broke"
I've had late 80's Honda pumps last 200K miles. I think it depends how you care for the cooling system.

On some engines, sometimes, the water pump can seize and cause the timing belt to break. If you have an interference engine, that just trashed your engine.

Ken2,
I think the water pump seizing & causing the timing belt to break is well..
really,really,really,really,really,really,RARE if indeed impossible. !
First you'll have a bearing squeak, or leaky seals. I've heard of timing belts being thrown maybe that could happen if a water pump justlets loose, but I dont think they even " just let loose " I never heard of that before though.
But stranger things may happen ?

Any interfernce motor will suffer severe engine damage when the TB jumps a few teeth, or if the TB breaks due to a failing water pump bearing, belt tensioner, etc. For example, all VW/Audi 1.8T and 2.8 engines are interference motors.

Any TB, which is over 4 years old, is a liability due to old age, regardless of miles driven!

Sure, timing belts dry out even if there's less the 60k on them & a broken timing belt will cause an interference motor { like mine } some serious damage if it breaks. BUT, the water pump failing & then causing the timing belt to break is what I believe to be pretty rare, it'll leak, squeak first & you'll know repair in necessary ASAP.

Whenever we fit a cambelt to a vehicle with a cambelt driven water pump (thats Toyota, some Honda and Mitsi V6) I offer no warranty on the job unless the water pump is replaced as well. Two issues - for one it only takes another half hour to do the pump...do it once,do it right first time. Also if the pump fails in service it's a possible claim on faulty workmanship - I'm not having that!

Not common? not here,we see it enough not to want to be involved.

I've seen waterpumps go over 200k. I've also seen a brand new one fail on my SHO @ under 7,000 miles. (Guess it didn't like 7300 RPM!).
It's only a misteak (not replacing it) if it fails

Although, I did replace my pump & belts at the same time, 'cause it was right there.

i think water pumps are such a crapshoot... some last forever some die early! i had one replaced, it failed in a few months. the shop did it again and its still going for well over a year...
