Last OCI ( about 1100 miles ago) i used QSUD and a purolator classic

I hadnt been reading BITOG RECENTLY SO i did not know the issue with purolator filters tearing.

It seems to be consensus that they tear in the first 1000 miles.

Would I be able to tell if this occured?

How bad is this if it happens?

Should I dump the oil right now and replace the filter?

What is your model number? Some have been far more prone to tearing than others.

If you are overly concerned just change the filter no reason at all to dump the oil.

Then cut that sucker and find out for yourself what you've got.

Yes you will be able to tell (unless you are blind, and then likely not). If you look at the media and you see a hole, then it tore.

If you are asking can you tell if it tore without cutting, then no.

Sounds like you should have stayed away from BITOG as it is only creating imaginary issues in your head. Is it really going to make you feel better to hear that you are fine and just drive your car? Is it really going to make you feel better to hear that you should change it out immediately only to find there was no problem to begin with. Make your own decisions but realize that you are asking the same forums that started your paranoia to begin with.

That is the issue. Don't fall for the FUD. A few loud people doesn't represent the 99% who don't have a torn Purolator. If it really bothers you go ahead and change the filter early. There is no negative in doing so.

Yeah, it's all in your head ... LoL. If it makes you feel better, then just change the filter and top off the oil if needed.

This is all made up ...
PS - there were actually quite a few that tore that didn't make it in the spreadsheet.

^^^ Wrong ... been over that whole debate already. So you think only filters that tear wind up in the hands of only BITOG members who cut open oil filters? That's a big stretch there.

Right, and the conclusion of the debate was a bunch of quacks who, ignore the scientific method.

Even if it tears its not a big deal. The oil will get filtered eventually in the next pass.

You need to cut the filter apart to see if its torn.

Best bet is to use another brand next time if the possibility of a torn filter bothers you.

No way to know if it will tear or is torn. Depending on the type of engine, I would exchange it for a known good filter like the Fram Ultra and recycle the old one, leaving the oil in place.

His filter is fine. Give it up.

That was only your conclusion ... so why has almost everyone here stopped using Purolator oil filters - except maybe the PSL synthetic? Hummmm ...

Got proof it's OK? He would only know after it's used ... which might be too late.

I like my coffee filters with tears in them too ... my teeth will filter out the grounds. If my teeth miss them, then I guess it's some good "roughage" for the system.

What could potentially be bad is torn edges of the media breaking off and going through the motor. Why take the chance? I can't believe guys still think using torn oil filters is just fine and dandy.

If he feels comfortable taking the (how ever small) risk, then great. If he's not feeling real lucky then swap it out. What makes you sleep good at night should be what actions you take in life.

While a spreadsheet on the internet is an interesting middle school science project, it doesnt pass even the most basic methods of scientific analysis.

I can't believe your glittering generalizations will change many minds.

Yeah, I guess it's not big deal. With over 60+ reported tears, and it's now been about 1-1/2 years since it all started. And guys are still reporting a few here and there ... at least the very few guys here who still use those Tearolators. Yeah, guess there's nothing to be concerned about.

BTW ... nobody who bailed out on Purolator has gone back yet. No confidence that anything has been done to fix the problem. Maybe in a few more years.
