After 35 years of doing my own oil changes, and resisting synthetics with a passion, I have finally changed over. I have always used conventional name brand oil bought on sale and changed at 3,000-4,000 miles every 3-4 months. I few years ago I bought some QS semi-synthetic (on sale) and have bought less conventional oil. I have extended the OCI to 4,500 miles with the QSSS. I found some Mobil 1 10W30 on sale after rebates for $2.99 per liter, and after going through some of my older stash, it is now in my Explorer. I now only drive this truck in winter from about Nov to March and put on about 8,000 miles. I am thinking of doing a yearly oil change on it. So far it seems fine, however I have never noticed any differneces in oils

After reading on the good info here, I am no longer going to buy any conventional oil after my stash is gone. Plan to use semi-synthetic or PP in all the vehicles from now on...

If you want to do 1 year oil changes which are nice, syn oil is the way to go. And you engine should last at least as long as dino changes.

With synthetic oil (like Synpower for example in 5 qt containers) costing not greatly more than conventional motor oil I think the synthetic is the better buy. The synthetic will probably keep an engine cleaner, you could go further on oil changes, and the synthetic will flow better in cold weather.

PP and M1 are very good choices that could do 1 year no problem, they can be found at walmart for a good price, use a quality oil filter not FRAM or ecore and do your 1 year and be happy.

You should just go full synthetic and take advantange of the winter benefits that you paid for. The blends don't seem that much better than the conventional oils. IMO

plus you get a bonus of maybe 1 mpg better ,especially in winter and if the oil is clean. It almost pays for itself.

Let us know what you think about the oil after 6k miles or so, let us know your opinion on how it handled compared to conventional.

I gotta ask though, in Waterloo ON, does a 10w have enough cold flow to be used in winter? I don't know what your winters are like, but I'm just assuming from being that far north that it's not uncommon to hit temps below 0 degrees f at night.

Also, how many miles on the Explorer

I have used 10w30 year round most of my life even after 5W30 came around. Only used 5W30 the last 4 years or so. The engine has 140,000 Miles on it, so a bit thicker oil should be better. Mobil 1 10W30 has a pour point of -56F IIFC, so much better than most 5w30 conventionals

In My area we would hit 0F maybe 5-6 times per winter. I do go up north alot and would see -20F no probles. I am not worried about Mobil 1 10W30 in those temps..
