I recently purchased a used Toyota MR2 with 85000 miles on it. Its had at least 3 previous owners and I have no idea what oil they used. I put Mobile 1 10-30 synthetic in it......

Did I do the right thing by using synthetic?

Thanks a ton....... Wild Bill

What makes you think you made a mistake? Use the Mobil 1 and if nothing goes wrong continue to use it.

i think you are fine, as well.

i might do a short OCI to see how clean the oil stays.

you might also change out all the other fluids in her and do the hoses (hoses fail from the inside out). it is worth doing, and it is the weekend.

Welcome. Now, What's Mobile 1

And why do you ask if you fudged something up AFTER you did it? I had an 86 Mr. Two and it was a big time oil burner with low miles. Hopefully your little engine wasnt thrashed like mine. You get the Lucky Dawg turbo Wild Bill Hiccup? Or do you have the slab side earlier unit with the 1.6 Litre DOHC Yamaha Motor?

Wild Bill - Synthetic oils are primarily for longer oil change intervals.
They are also useful for very high heat like with turbocharged engines, and EXTREME Arctic cold conditions.

OP, whatever you do, DONT do what i did. I put a LOT of SeaFoam, B12, MMO in the crankcase in addition to Synthetic oils. Now im questioning the health of my engine, it runs OK but the Oil is giving signals that would indicate worry, car performance says "Needs tune up" Oil looks like "Sludge monster," car drives "Perfect' when warmed, could be anything. Me asking every week something "What if" is the result, until i can go tend to it and examine and take wrenches and... the whole nine, whatever it is telling me.

This is on a 94 Probe that was beat on with previous owners before i bought it early this year, now look, still got it. its on ice for now. Check on the Oil, dont go crazy cleanin git, and you should have a great MR2.

Toyotas also are more reliable than my Mazda Ford.

Right, we need more info. Turbo or not? Nothing wrong with M1 10w30.. in fact a safe choice in case it is a turbo.

Thanks Charlie....so far so good. It seems to be more responsive with synthetic....was sluggish when I first got it.

Dan, you question made me smile.....no clue what the factory spec is...no owners manual. Maybe the spec is on the door sill plate?

Just kidding....it's the naturally aspirated version, no turbines that I know of.....not even sure where the engine is...opened the hood, looked like a spare tire cover. No dipstick or anything. Dang. Will keep looking.

Running better so far (fingers crossed), no big oil puddles underneath.....seems to like the Mobile 1.....

Thanks for responding......kinda had me worried but wasn't sure where to even start looking until finding this great forum. You guys are THE BEST.

Dang, is it not Mobile-1? The oil changer guy didn't speak english. When I asked for Mobil synthetic he just grinned and spun around and left.

Hmmmmm....as soon as I find the motor, will let you know. There has to be an engine in there, because there's hella noise and the exhaust pipe leaks little water droplets.

Why did I ask AFTER? LOL, Dang, dunno. Will have to ponder that one. Still laughing.

The motor can't be very big, maybe about the size of my scooter motor, or maybe a largish go-kart.

Any idea why it runs faster on the Mobile synthetic?

Generally, most any engine feels better on synthetic. Many still have a fear of switching, due to "Synthetic will carry away sludge that may have been sealing leaks and therefore 'cause' leaks." This is something many SAY is not true, though plenty have had it happen and are weary.

You could say Synthetic is more "Slippery" which will get a

from here. However, in super layman's terms, it seems to make many an engine run smoother.

Favorite synthetics seem to be: Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, Red Line and.or Royal Purple (lesser names,) AMSOIL, and HDEOs.

It should also be noted that you do not NEED a Synthetic as Conventional oil particularly PYB (Pennzoil Yellow Bottle) heck even SuperTech or Havoline (no more Texaco) is fine, its hard to find an Oil that will NOT pass muster, though different engines may and sometimes do act differently on different brands. BITOG will show you this.

If your engine has an uncertain history, keep an eye on it. (Level and leaks, plus Butt dyno and no smokes are how you pass the test if you are an Oil.)

As to the noise and thats how you know there is an engine.. yeah, thats an MR2! Fiero twin, or at least co-developed IIRC

OP WildBillC, Please re-read my post about what NOT to do that i did with my Probe, a 94 LX. If it runs good, it will continue to do so. Mine still runs just needs TLC and some "Inspection" ...... however, simpler seems to be better and i demonstrated that with my assault of cleaners. Didnt kill it. Just made me wonder. Still comin out dirty, too.

Do not do this to your Fiero err MR2. I heard the Oil filter is a PITA to get to on your car.
