Did Ford revise the 1.5L ecoboost at all?

Or is my new engine going to start consuming coolant just like the last one did?

This is the 4 cyl 1.5L, the one known for head sealing problems, has a TSB out on it. Not the new 3 cyl 1.5L.

I got to thinking about it and I’m wondering if I have a ticking time bomb. If I wanted to be doing a head gasket every 20k I would have bought a Subaru.

I’ll likely trade up to a new Explorer before this car is out of warranty but I’m curious nonetheless.

Yes they did revise the 1.5 4cyl EcoBoost motor, specifically the engine block itself has revised coolant passages. I have pictures showing a comparison.

I have a 2014 Fusion with the same engine that is currently undergoing this replacement process. They're replacing both head and short block, all under Ford's extended powertrain warranty. For people that had the engine replaced, so far I've only read one story where a guy had coolant leaking into cylinder #2 again.

The gashes in the old design actually look like something that shouldn't be there! They look like cracks!

Those stand alone cylinders just look wrong. I know there's probably a million running around.....just looks wrong.

Honda has used open deck siamesed blocks for a while. As long as you don’t overheat it, they are good engines.

I still see a small opening or divot on the new block, all on one side too. I wonder what Ford did as a remedy?

Part of the remedy is reprogramming the PCM in how it deals with the flow of engine coolant.

Honda has used open deck siamesed blocks for a while. As long as you don’t overheat it, they are good engines.

But Honda (to my knowledge) doesn't run large amounts of boost through theirs and tune them to extract every last horsepower from the thing, and run that 1.5L engine in a 3400lb car. Open deck siamesed blocks had always been a no-go when it comes to boost, Ford must have some real good metallurgy there and casting process for that to hold up to such a high power output.

Fords 1.6 has the same issue , those slots pinch together and destroy the seal . There is a cylinder support made by Mountune and some other aftermarket company's .
