Gents,

I know that GM requires their oil to meet Dexos (1 or 2 depending).

It looks to me like the Dexos specs are pretty good. Would it be a good idea to use the spec as an indicator of a premium oil, and use Dexos spec'd oil for, say, Hondas or Toyotas, or Fords, or...?

Yup, even though I have no Dexos required vehicles, it is a great quick way to see if it is a modern, updated oil. Similar to ACEA, BMW-LL, MB and VW specs. It adds to the current API spec that may not change as fast as auto makers like.
When I found some clearance Auto Zone brand oil, I was wondering about it, but since it had Dexos approval, I figured it would work for me.

But not having it does not automatically make it a bad oil (I am looking at you Maxlife).

If there are two oils that meet your OEM specs, and one happens to have DEXOS then that's what I'll take...if it does Porsche C30 as well, then it gets a better look.

Find most of it Ive treid recently too thick for my Nissan 2.5. I have to thin with 5w20. Recently I bought a non-dexos 10w30 QSUD ( which has a lower kv100 than the 5w30 dexos1) and had to thin that too. Still this way with over 30K miles. This car wants a 9.7 CST and ?? for HTHS likely below 3.0 cP.

If I could find some Sustina 5w30 for a reasonable $$ it would be in there.

MaxLife is Dexos in 5W-20 & 30.

Yeah, but that is a very recent change, and for some reason, the qt bottles have the approval, the 5qt jugs of the same oil do not (even states it on the .pdf)

Another thread about this. Valvoline is not planning to reformulate Maxlife to meed Dexos 2nd generation specs (valid as of 9/2017) so they are beginning to remove the Dexos logo from their packaging starting with the 5 quart jugs. Single quart packaging will follow soon. For all intents and purposes, it still meets 1st Generation Dexos 1 and will forever. Maxlife is one of my go-to oils if nothing is on sale.

This whole dexos1 Gen 2 rollout is interesting...it seems to me that the M1 AP jugs have a Gen 2 license code on them, but they do not have the Gen 2 symbol. I'm assuming that makers are probably not supposed to use the new symbol until September, but who knows. I would guess that there are going to be a lot of oil containers with the "old" markings on the shelves past September and some of them are going to be newer oils like the AP that likely went through the Gen 2 testing!
BTW, the Valvoline Durablend and Full Synthetic lines already have Gen 2 licenses. It's weird to me that the only M1 on this list is vanilla 5W30, although the AP oils on the shelves now have very similar dexos1 codes on them.

You can see how extensive and complete dexos tests are: http://www.aftonchemical.com/Afton/media/PdfFiles/Specification_Handbook.pdf

Its an extensive spec, piling Euro ACEA on top of U.S. SN tests. Its telling that it indirectly requires at least a strong synthetic blend to meet it.

Using the Lubrizol Relative Performance tool shows a full-synthetic dexos1 and A5/B5 xw30 oil likely qualifies as an LL-01 FE (HTHS 3.0 category) oil,
https://online.lubrizol.com/relperftool/pc.html

Since engine tests and elastomer compatibility requirements run the gamut of engine types (euro and American engines), a dexos1 oil is good for all makes, including anything the Japanese or Koreans make.

What I find odd on that list is that there are 2 Synpower Synthetic 5w-20 and 2 Synpower Synthetic 5w-30 listed. I wonder if the Synpower Maxlife is Dexos Gen 2 approved? There are many other manufacturers that also have duplicate listings (same license number between them as well). It is not a qt vs jug thing, since Synpower has only 1 0w-20 license listing.
Wonder what is the deal with that?
