Denso air filter worth the price?

I noticed this on the Denso filter for my Toyota ECHO.

Although there is no rubber gasket, the air filter box is designed to 'crush' this filter into place when installed correctly.

The filter is not exposed to the engine compartment, even if you splashed a cup of water directly on the air box.

yup, the filter in my scion xb is made of the same stuff and works the best out of anything I've tried so far. I was skeptical at first, but I did not like the fit of any of the aftermarket stuff, and the AFE Pro Dry S I tried in it did not seal to the top of the air cleaner box at all and was letting all kinds of dust past the seal. So far I've noticed no dirt or dust on the "clean side" of the air filter housing. At $12 a filter, I think I'll stick with the factory ones.

The Fram filter is about $15.
The Denso is about $32. Any reason to go this route. Plan to run for 30k-50k miles.

On my 2005 Subaru Legacy, both the Fram and Wix air filters allowed some dust past the filter gasket. I just changed back to the OE Denso filter, and we will see how well the dust sealing is on that. It costs around $18 from subarugenuineparts.

The OEM part (16546 AA020) lists for $15.95, although I'm not sure who makes it. It should be an oiled paper filter with a metal frame and a foam surround. Not sure where they would be made, as there could be several sources, including factories in the US, Japan, Mexico, or even the Philippines.

I don't believe the OEM part is necessarily Denso.

Just bought a denso filter for my scion at the dealership today, their up to $19 now. Still, .not bad for something that will probably last me 50000 miles.

Air filter is the first defensive measure for a healthy engine, it should capture most abrasive debris before they enter the engine. For an extra $10 or so, the higher quality air filter that will lasted 50-60k miles isn't that much per thousand miles, about 20 cents extra.

Where is the Denso filter made and where is the Fram filter made?
I use Purolator filters that are made in USA. For the Camry I maintain I might get the Denso one if it's made in USA, since everything else I have found for it is made in China.

As a general indicator of quality, I'm not even sure judging by where the final assembly of a product is tells you much. The label with often say "Made in XYZ with imported and XYZ parts. Besides that, most of this stuff is made by machine, and there isn't really that much difference in manufacturing quality if the same machines are properly set up in Japan, Canada, the US, Thailand, Malaysia, or even China. Maybe a cut rate Chinese company actually designing and manufacturing an item might create a substandard product, but Denso isn't going to stand for any factory making products with their name on it creating anything of poor quality.

I know we're wedded to the idea that items made in China are junk, and they are to a great degree. However, there's also some first rate state of the art manufacturing going on in China. I remember a group from an American plastic molding company going on a trip to China, where the owner was losing business to competitors around the world - especially China. The jobs he often got were rush custom ones that an overseas company might not get done in time to make a delivery. But on this tour he noted how advanced the plant he visited was in China. All the molding equipment was the latest from Japan and Europe and the automation was state of the art and more advanced than what he had. Part of is would be that there's a lot of capital in China willing to invest in business in China. That's a huge incentive to foreign companies looking for a place to manufacture.

I look at a typical Fram air filter made in the US or Canada and it looks like junk with a soft orange foam surround and a cheap looking mesh screen that bends easily. I once cut myself on one when I grabbed it and the sharp edge of the mesh just poked through the foam. Then the foam is just gooped on more than it really has to be, blocking some of the surface area of the filter.

I bought a couple of Denso filters for the LS400, just because I thought Denso was an OEM supplier to Toyota.

I don't know if this makes Denso filters any better than the others, but the filter media seems more like a soft, cloth blanket than thin cellulose used on other brands.

I think I paid around $15/ea for them from Rock Auto.

Denso air filters are OEM for my Montero. I live in the dusty desert of the soutwest. Since I installed a snorkel the air filter is rarely changed. Denso is great for my application.

I tried the K&N version, but not condusive to my environment.

Cheers,

my highlander 04 denso ait f is made in usa

- marked on the filter seal area: - made in usa >PET< GQDc
