Delvac 1 "hot idle" = higher pressure than T&SUV??

As is typical with all the synthetics I've ever seen before, the hot idle oil pressure is usually slightly less than their dino cousins.

I had been running Mobil 1 T&SUV in my '88 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL for the past 2 changes. Not being able to even find the stuff on the shelves anymore, I picked up the latest version (CI-4+ upright container) Delvac 1. I've also been using a Wix filter each time.

My hot idle pressure is now sitting @ 1.5 bars pressure, whereas the T&SUV was always at 1 bar or slightly less. I find the Delvac 1 idle pressure is similar to the Delvac 1300 15W-40 I was running in my other '88 300 SEL last summer.

I find this confusing seeing as it should be the same secret recipe as T&SUV unless something has changed in the past few months...

Anyone have any guesses.?

Gauge variance/error. Batch variation.

Unless you have had that pressure gauage calibrated and have had the chance to sample all the oils you have mentioned.

If you look at the VOA's, the chemical active ingredients are (virtually) identical.

I'd say batch variance too. I can tell between D1 and RTS. D1 must have a broader VI. RTS pushes above my pressure relief limit when cold (off idle) and has a lower hot idle pressure then D1. D1 will push it too ..but not to the extent that RTS will.

I believe all of my D1 was from the same batch. I've been using RTS for the past year (or there abouts) but will go back to T&SUV when existing inventory of RTS is gone.

It must be batch variance. I just spoke with my father who is driving the other 300 SEL around while I'm away from home. It's running the other 2 gallons from the same case of Delvac 1 and it's seeing around 1.75 bars hot idle pressure.

Delvac-1 and T&SUV are not the same recipe - hasn't been in the time frame that I've been a member here. Go to the Virgin Oil Forum & see/compare for yourself. The add-packs are a little different. I should save this post because I answer this question at least once a month here - along with the Chevron is the same as Havoline debate... which those two aren't the same either.

I'll take your word that the add packs are a little different. I don't see why that would be proof positive ..or even highly suggestive that they are not the same product. Any two samples from different lots can have varied levels of additives. Any process has its variables. The spec sheets ...just about all I've seen, say "typical properties".

So although you may be correct, I've still got nothing to make me feel otherwise.

I read somewhere, it may have even been here, is that Mobil "remarketed/relabeled" Delvac 1 as Truck and SUV for broader market coverage. It makes sense because Delvac 1 is, for sake of argument, a "truck stop only" oil for big rigs. It's working because they sure do sell a lot of Truck and SUV...it seems that everytime I go to Walmart or Murrays, they are either sold out or low on inventory of the stuff. Now if Mobil would just throw a VW/Euro spec on it............they would sell every drop that they made.

Well, that's what makes me believe that it's identical. The Katrina event made T&SUV disappear ..not Delvac 1. I think that D1 was the core market .and T&SUV was an added market to soak up capacity ..or achieve a more economical process by increased throughput. When demand in the commercial OTR sector outstripped production capacity, then the T&SUV supply dried up.

OTOH, they may be produced in the same blending facility and whatnot ..and not dosed to the same extent in additives...but then why would you bother to produce a CI-4+ (as my son when he was very young would say) "FOR REAL" and one that's the decaf version
