Delphi Fuel Pump Assembly Failed Sending Unit

Well, this is frustrating.

Last month I put a new fuel pump in the Grand Marquis. It started to have some issues that pointed to the fuel pump. Changed the fuel pump with what I thought was the best one I could get. Car runs great. I think I've put 1200 miles on it since then.

Yesterday , driving home, my gas gauge stops working and the distance to empty is showing C0. Then it sets a check engine light for fuel pump circuit malfunction.

Apparently it's a common problem on the aftermarket pumps on these cars. Of course, I just threw out the original one out last week so I can't even put just-a pump in that.

I'm getting real tired of throwing good money after bad on a car that maybe I should have just let go to the junkyard when it needed an engine. It has to get inspection next month and it won't do it with the check engine light on. Not sure where I'm going to borrow the time from to change it ... but this car isn't worth paying $130 an hour and a 500% markup on a cheap fuel pump to have a shop do it.

Can you still get an oem one from ford? I have not checked. I never use aftermarket pumps or sending units.
During the 'vid, Ford dropped OEM support for a lot of their older vehicles.
For being the same basic car from 1992-2011, Ford had so many single year changes to the platform that it just made sense to get rid of everything

I had the same experience with a Delphi in an '05 Yukon. The gauge worked, but was totally wrong showing you were near empty when you still had plenty left.

I was also frustrated because I thought I was buying decent quality, and this was 2014 (still in my order history). I haven't used a Delphi pump in anything since.

98-02 don't have FPDM because they have the return style fuel system with a vacuum regulator.

Those showed up in 04 or 05 I believe.
If that's the case, I would like to know how the computer knows to set a code for fuel pump circuit problems.

My 2003 has a FPDM.

According to the books, FPDM didn't appear till '05 for Crown Vic, but don't quote me on that

I would assume G.M's and Crown Vics are the same. I have dealt with the FPDM and fuel pump on my 2003 G.M. so I know 2003 has that set up. You can't trust the "books". Maybe the OP should mention the code he's getting.

I've had good luck with Delphi. Warranty?
Unfortunately it had to be modified for me to avoid dropping the tank. It would only affect evap and not the pump/ sending unit, but no warranty.

The tow truck driver asked me what brand fuel pump because he recently put a Delphi in his f150 and it lasted 3 days.

I went used truck shopping yesterday. At the point I'm tired of fixing junk.

When I have time to work on it, I'm going to try a Denso pump in the OEM sending unit. Until then, I'm borrowing my WFH fiance's Sentra or using my f350 which is rough to say the least...

I rigged up an old clicky clacky inline pump and some fuel lines from my lawn mower to the filter and sucked 12 gallons out. That plus the 60 miles I drove Friday since filling up should be empty enough to pull it all out without getting a bath lime last time.

I would try a Bosch fuel pump.

Unless the tanks have changed from 2001 and 2003, I only had to loosen the strap bolts to lower the tank a little to get the sending unit out and deal with the connections. The sending unit was located at the front of the tank. The hardest part was dealling with the connections through the right rear wheel well.

I was able to get a bosch for my truck, but I can't find bosh sending unit/pump or just a pump for my housing for this car.

The connector on top of the tank and the pump assy itself I was able to get out without dropping the tank. Only issue I had was the connector for the purge solenoid that attaches on top of the tank wouldn't fit between the tank/body or tank/strap to get out or back in with the new one. I ended up cutting and splicing.

Even though the car itself is in decent shape rust wise, I know i'd break off the hardware that holds the tank straps in and Ford hasn't made them in a very long time.

Ordered a new pump from Rock Auto. Will be putting this in my OEM housing. No Bosch but Denso and this seems to be made in Japan from what reviews are saying.

Also - we determined this to be a lie (Rockauto's note on replacing the whole thing)

When I did my last pump replacement , I paid the higher price and bought local just in case of a failure during the warranty period. I had no reason to replace the entire unit since it was rust free , just the pump. . Last thing I want to do is deal with an online order returning a defective pump and the time involved..
