Tonight on a drive from Roswell to Ruidoso I had to evade a coyote, a cat and a bunny in the middle of the highway.. Thanks to HID headlights and good steering/suspension we all lived through that run up the mountain.

Its that time of year. I drive a stretch of rural roads on my way home in the evening, and with the time change it is even more awesome. Last year I had one ALMOST hit me just like that. Luckily I saw her coming, and she saw me. I swear she left snot on my drivers side window. Everybody stay alert!

I got caught in a stampede of deer a few weeks ago. I was only going about 15 mph, as I saw a group of them on the passenger side of the road. I was honking the horn, just to make sure they knew not to run out in front of me. As I was about to pass them, 4 came from the driver side, one hit my hood, the other hit my door, they were running full speed, panic mode. I thought the whole side of my car would be caved in, that's how hard it felt. Minimal damage, most of it with paintless dent removal....I still have some fur that got lodged between the rim and the tire.

There are a couple areas around here that are notorious for deer, especially this time of the year. When I leave the house early (around 5:30 or 6:00) it's normal to see the deer, especially along a game trail that they use to cross the highway. In those areas we always slow to 35 or so, even though the speed limit is 55. Each area is around 1/2 mile long.

3 or 4 deer hits happen in each of those areas each year.

LOL, 3 or 4 kangaroo hits occur between the gate at work and the next road every year.

In a 20 mile commute, I pass a new 'Roo carcass every day on average.

A section of I-485 east of town, not far from me will have several dear kills this time of year. The county regularly checks that area and another to the south of here. It makes a real mess when one gets hit by a semi at 70 MPH.

Last year, I had 38 consecutive commuting days where I encountered deer either on the road or within a few feet of it, driving mostly rural and suburban PA roads. One finally charged into the side of my car, which I didn't even see until a second before impact. Sometimes, no matter how careful you are there is absolutely nothing you can do, and they emerge from the side of a mountain at full gallop right into the side of your car. For some reason, and its still a little early yet for peak season, I've only encountered one so far this year, although I've seen plenty of carcuses. But I'm sure it will get worse. I have a long commute, and I think I'll be lucky to get through the season without a collision. Before last year, I went many years with no close encounters and then last year was just crazy. The deer harvest during hunting season has been way down for several years, but plenty of them are clearly roaming around. Part of it is that so much land is posted now, allowing the deer to flourish unchecked and they are also moving into residential areas where hunting isn't possible. Most of the ones I saw last year weren't in wooded areas.

That car has seen some stuff...

Your telling me. Lol

MN hunters are set to have a record harvest so that will help. Warm weather had hunters enjoying sitting in the stands in shorts.

I had a radiator grille destroyed once by a pigeon that flew out of a bush at the wrong time, been stopped dead by a flock of sheep being herded down a single lane track, and accidentally once ran over a fox at night whilst driving much too fast down a twisty county lane.

Thank goodness we don't have extraneous deer or kangaroo on he road network over here!

I've had a number birds fly directly into my car, hit an opossum coming around a blind curve (That did some damage), had a flock of wild turkey in the middle of the road desperately flapping their wings to get lift off to clear the car which they barely did, had to stop for a black bear in the middle of the road and a cow that had escaped its pasture. But the deer are by far the worst here, you always have to be alert and even then it doesn't always help.

they need deer crossing signs lol

We have a lot of deer here in the Blue Ridge mountains. but fortunately I only hit one live one. I also ran over a dead one in the road on a curve where I couldn't swerve to miss it. Smelled burning fur from the exhaust system for a week but no damage!

I am becoming concerned about the increasing black bear population here. We have had four bears cross the road in front of us in the last year, two while we were walking! Saw another yesterday climbing a tree. Neighbors are reporting quite a few as well. At least they don't run into cars very often, more like lumbering across the road.

I assume that was meant as a joke / sarcasm, judging by the lol. I've always thought those signs were about the most useless thing in the world. First of all they're all over the place, so everybody ignores them. Secondly, anybody with any driving experience already knows they're likely in a deer populated area. Even most places that don't have the signs are deer populated areas. And lastly, what the heck are you supposed to do about it. Any driver with any common sense is already on the alert, and those that aren't, aren't going to suddenly do so because of the sign. And in a significant percentage of cases, there is absolutely nothing the driver could have done to prevent the collision. Its like when you come up on a "prepare for lengthy delay" sign. When you get to that, how exactly are you supposed to prepare?

Well quoted about 1,500-2k in damages. Called allstate and got a claim started. They put me in a rental car. Shop should b able to start the work Monday.
