Last year, I had 38 consecutive commuting days where I encountered deer either on the road or within a few feet of it, driving mostly rural and suburban PA roads. One finally charged into the side of my car, which I didn't even see until a second before impact. Sometimes, no matter how careful you are there is absolutely nothing you can do, and they emerge from the side of a mountain at full gallop right into the side of your car. For some reason, and its still a little early yet for peak season, I've only encountered one so far this year, although I've seen plenty of carcuses. But I'm sure it will get worse. I have a long commute, and I think I'll be lucky to get through the season without a collision. Before last year, I went many years with no close encounters and then last year was just crazy. The deer harvest during hunting season has been way down for several years, but plenty of them are clearly roaming around. Part of it is that so much land is posted now, allowing the deer to flourish unchecked and they are also moving into residential areas where hunting isn't possible. Most of the ones I saw last year weren't in wooded areas.
