Dealership oils

All of the dealers around here are on the manufacturers' branded oil programs due to the strong incentives.

Only exception seems to be the Sonic dealers due to their national affiliation with SOPUS.

I have my first vehicle ever on a dealership extended warranty that requires them to do the 1st dozen oil changes.
When asked - the service rep tells me it’s ACD 0W20. I didn’t ask what they used outside of these warranty plans …
However - from paperwork on change 3 - he tells me - OMG - can you hang around - tech put in ACD 5W30 - I said thanks for the offer - see you next time 👍

Is that AC Delco?

Working at a Kia dealer, It’s probably been about 10 years, we used to have bulk 5W-30 Mobil Super semi synthetic. Then sometime later Kia partnered with Total, we had to bring in 5W-30 & 0W-20 synthetic in quarts. You could upgrade if you wanted to.

About 4 years ago we switched over to full synthetic 5W-30 & 0W-20 in bulk tanks with the digital dispenser guns. The Total thing ended about a year or so ago so we should be free to use whatever oil we want but no one wants to deal with switching providers & things of that nature.

So it really depends on what the dealers decide to stock. Even if the part number on your RO is the OEM oil it could be someone in parts was to lazy to assign a proper part number to the bulk Mobil, as an example.

A few years ago, Quaker State had a marketing partnership with Hyundai. As far as I know, that partnership did not extend to Kia. QS had Hyundai specific point of sale materials for use in the service and parts departments. The dealerships to whom I sold oil had bulk tanks for QS 5W-20 in the shops. Dealers weren't obligated to take advantage of the partnership, but there was no Hyundai branded OEM oil , and the pricing was very good. I've retired, so it's been a few years since I've had first hand knowledge.

If the OP is good with Quaker State, and can have his services done at a Hyundai dealer, he should just ask them.

Interesting. Your dealer's partnership ended about the same time they had a massive clearance via Advance Auto Parts. Probably not a coincidence.

My Subaru dealer used to have a bulk synthetic as their base synthetic and SGMO as their premium offering. At one point they had Mobil 1 although I do not know which tier this was. They actually use the SGMO in quart containers so I would guess that it's pricey.

There are some dealers that offer Motul as the premium offering and that used to be even more popular in Canada.

I owned a 2000 VW New Beetle Turbo for 7 years. The warranty included free maintenance for the first 4 years including free oil changes. I have no idea what kind of oil they used and I doubt it was full synthetic but they did put in a can of BG MOA with every oil change and you could see them grab the can and put it in.

I've seen Valvoline bulk used and additives being pushed back at my old Hyundai dealership. When I leased my Subaru the service ticket said something like WH SD bulk I'm thinking wolf's head super duty. This dates back to 2007-2012

When I leased my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon the dealer was using AGIP then.

Local Kia was using Havoline, within the past year or so.

I think if it meets spec they'll use whatever best bulk pricing could also be a regional thing.

Problem is every dealer could use a different bulk oil distributor. You really don’t know what your getting and dealers normally rely on the distributor being honest.
Yes that's my fear. I get free oil & filter changes every 5,000 miles for life at the Nissan dealer from whom I bought my 2019 Altima SL new. They claim they use Genuine Nissan oil, but since it is bulk, who knows. So I sampled it two weeks ago and am waiting for the UOA report from Blackstone. I am as interested in the additive metals and viscosity as I am the wear metals.

Should be interesting and I look forward to the results. 12 years at the dealer and we never in that time tested what was in the tanks.

the three GM dealerships I have had experience with in the last 4 years have advertised on their floor mat covers and used Mobil lubricants...Mobil 1 can be substituted for an upcharge unless that is OEM than it wasn't an additional charge to me...Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick/GMC...

In my area the last I checked (roughly 5 years ago) our JEEP dealership was using a Kendal oil, as was our local SUABRU dealership also using Kendal oil. Our local FORD dealer does still use MOTORCRAFT oil in various flavors.

Still running with no issues?
