Dealership oils

Most there at dealership service centers don't know the difference between Mobil-1 and Mobil Syn. They often see the Mobil emblem and mistake it for Mobil-1.

There are also tons of Oil Change places that use (for example) Pennzoil sticker on their bulk tank and there's not an ounce of Pennzoil inside the tank.

I myself would never purchase bulk tank oil. Settling of additives occur and those getting the bottom of the tank additives get more & by the time the tank is only 1/4-1/2 full, well those customers get less additives due to settling.
Nobody is going inside these tanks daily and shaking & stirring the contents.

If you are a regular purchaser of bulk tank oils, always buy from a very high volume oil change shop. That way their tank oils get constant changeover.

Mobil 1 seems cheap and a diluted brand these days anyway.

0W-20: $3.59 / qt (drum)
0W-16: $4.06 / qt (drum)
0W-8: $11.97 / qt (not available in drums)

How many dealers do we suppose are going to charge the customer for 0W-8 but use 0W-16 bulk oil? There are some juicy profit margins at stake.
Cannot really blame them if they did. Our Toyota (spec’ed for 0W16) got its “free” oil change and nothing on the window sticker or invoice said anything about the brand or viscosity. I assume it is Toyota 0W16 cause that is what they advertise. But it could be a different bulk 0W20. I didn’t ask cause I don’t really care.

You will never know for sure unless you DIY!

Even then though how much do you really know about what is in the bottle or box… companies change products, processes, vendors, formulations, materials etc. all the time. If they run out of X element, material or whatever that day because of supply chain issue you don’t think there is a Y or Z substitutions to ensure product gets out the door.

Dealers rarely use drums -- its either quarts or bulk.

0W16 and 0W20 are $13.24/gal or $3.31/qt.

They stopped showing testing and really scaled down their marketing. Probably don't need it at this point. Mobil 1 is similar to Toyota in that the product sells itself based on reputation. As oil geeks we expect more though.

Well perhaps some geeks. This geek expects approvals, specifications and licenses which all their products still have. They are one of the clearest blenders in terms of not obfuscating which of those they have, they do not have, and which (rarely) are only recommendations. I’d take Porsche A40 or VW 504 00 approval any day over some silly test, marketing or my inadequate ability to predict performance from a PDS of typical values.

Calling it a “cheap and diluted” brand is silly in my opinion.

Agree. They've always been stellar about that.

What are the sources of such bold and generalized claims?

I'll leave the pros, cons and all the rest - as it relates to evidence exposure, all to your imagination.

BTW BITOG Members that replied in this thread. For the first time ever (that I can recall), I shook hands with one named Abbey two days ago.

So it was your imagination.

Personally I’ve had service writer’s not know the difference between Mobil 1 and Mobil super syn. They just know it’s Mobil and synthetic or synthetic blend.

It's like this-at the risk of repeating myself (since it appears 90% of threads are these days). I have had dozens upon dozens of Dealer visits. The oil change was done correctly. My motor didn't blow up. They have performed warranty work to my satisfaction

I am 67 years old-I am not crawling underneath vehicles to change oil anymore. I am capable-but simply don't wish to.

I have had no dealer issues-I must be in The Twilight Zone......

Im also in my late 60’s and have had hundreds of dealer visits and even worked at a dealer for 12 years. What in the heck does this have to do with what’s in the bulk oil tank? Do you even have an idea how extremely rare an oil related engine failure is? What does this have to do with me? I never said you need to crawl under your car…and you are in the minority if you’ve never had a dealer/independent issue. Im a woman that does her own oil changes because I enjoy it and grew up doing it.

My 2008 Mini Cooper manual says to use Castrol 5w30 oil. I was told by the dealer parts department that the official Mini Cooper branded oil is made by Castrol. An independent Mini/BMW shop I have used, used to use Castrol Euro Synthetic. Now they use Penzoil Platinum Euro. I asked about the change and the owner said that BMW/Mini now have Penzoil making their branded oils.

It's obvious...whatever oil they use doesn't affect your vehicle. If indeed if even what 10% of claims people like you make. It's supposed to meet manufacturers specs-for whatever application it's used for. It's hard to believe many dealers would put at risk a multi million (or in many cases billion) dollars business using the wrong oil in your motor.

At least you worked at a dealer. Usually the claims are from-"I know a friend of a friends 3rd cousin twice removed from a second marriage who made these claims."
Yo

It's great we have diversity on this board-and I didn't go any easier on my comments either.
