Dealer took a *personal* check...

Yeah its not that big of a deal. I have always bought my cars with a check or in some cases cash. But these days its harder to buy new vehicles with cash since its not traceable. My current truck I bought used so I was able to buy it with a stack of $100's.

Finance a vehicle? Nah.

They always come in with some security dude with a briefcase full of cash handcuffed to him. A friend that works at the BMW dealer across the street had a prince come in with a stack inter-bank US$1000 bills to buy a car.

Yeah remember that when you fill up. My friend had one in his class at school, was showing him his new $200k watch for a B day present.

What's so surprising about this? I thought all of them take personal checks. They just run a credit check on you and make you sign some paper that says if the check bounces, you are financing the vehicle.

Now, if they took a personal check and didn't run a credit check on you or make you sign the financing paperwork, then I would be surprised

Not accepted down here in the transactions I have done.

Has to be Bank Cheque or cash, but I am sure they'll take credit cards...

Nope, won't take credit (or debit) cards.

I think part of the problem down here is that they employ people who would be stretched driving a cement truck, but are good blokes down the pub, and give them a set of rules to abide by, prepared by another bunch of blokes who would be stretched...

The fact that to write a large cheque with no follow through is fraud actually makes sense (never thought of it until this thread, and why the local mechanic won't take a personal cheque, but the builder will), as will the utilities.

Why is this unusual? My last four new cars have been with personal check, none at the same dealership. Pretty standard fare.

They took the personal check. They did not require that any financing paperwork to be signed. If they ran a credit check, it was without my knowledge... but I assume that they ran something.

In this area, it just isn't common for a car dealer to take a personal check for 100% of the cost. Maybe I've just been going to all of the wrong dealers up to now.

Honestly does not bother me one bit. Its capitalism at its finest, they have the supply, we have the demand. We would do the same if the tables were turned.

As long it is a local bank and is during banking hours is what I have been told my toyota in west chicago, we are MI and still used a check (la salle bank) to buy our Sienna.
