Dealer Parts Dept Price Negotation, 101

I forgot one thing, dealer price on parts sometime can be very low. I bought the PCX-004 oil filter made by Toyo-Roki in mid-2004 from a Honda dealer in Santa Ana where I bought my S2000, someone on S2KI.com posted the part number for a combo filter and metal wrench end cap, I wrote down that part number and went to dealer to buy a filter. They gave me the filter alone and told me the price, I then asked if they had the combo filter and wrench package. The part counter guy came back in few minutes and could not find the price on his computer, so he sold me the combo for the same price. Later I found that the metal wrench end cap listed for more than $10.

Just like The_Eric said, go in with a positive and friendly attitude usually get better services and sometime better price.

Where is it located that an AGM is necessary? There isnt necessarily a good reason to use that versus flooded, which can be more compliant in some situations anyway. Is it in the cabin somewhere?

Yes, it is in the corner of the cabin.

Yeah.... battery fumes in the passenger compartment is bad.
The little battery powers 12v systems when the car is in acc, or ready off, and basically just fires up the hybrid system besides that.
PLays havoc with all manner of things if it's weak.
cunfuses the snotoutta the towtruck drivers when it's dead.

The battery size is a large 49, I priced the local part stores and most of them charge more than $110-120, Walmart Everstart Maxx is $88 but with only 3 years free replacement, no more pro-rate. Costco and Sam Clubs don't have it. Then I found Ford have BXT-49 with 3 years free replacement and 100 months pro-rate, I checked a closest dealer and they have it at $110, another dealer about 5 miles farther sells it for $99 and the third dealer a little farther away sells it for $94.

When I do need the battery I will go to the closest dealer and try to see if they can match/beat the $94, if not then go directly to the third dealer to get it. I am willing to drive extra 12 miles round trip to save $17 ($16 + tax).

How much did Fletcher Jones want for a Genuine MB battery?

Prius may be the most reliable car in Toyota's stable, but you can just imagine the high repair cost when something finally does go wrong

I can swallow high parts and maintenance prices for luxury cars, but for an econobox?? NO THANKS.

This! Speaking as a GM parts guy, this will work every time. All too often we hear things like "What?? that piece of plastic can't cost more than 2 cents to make!" Or "I want a discount because I know the guys over at *** repair shop" It also seems that more often than not the worst attitude comes from Cadillac and Corvette owners, who seem to believe that since they spent so much money on the car itself, anything it ever needs should just be free! People also tend to forget that we don't compete with Autozone, so calling to ask for a price on a part, and then telling us that we're crazy because Autozone has it for half that price really isn't going to get any discount.

Rant over.

I think it's funny when even the parts guy laughs at the price. I had the Dodge dealer look up a rear exhaust hanger bracket for my old Dakota. This is the little steel bracket with a bar that bolts to the frame to hang the tail pipe. It was 90 bucks. 90 bucks. Even the parts guy laughed out loud when he saw the price. Not even a 50% discount was going to generate a sale there!

All of the Everstart Maxx batteries went up to $95 here.

Unless you own a shop, you shouldn't need to be a oft-repeat customer.....then time to get a better car. Honda is notorious for dealer variances. Call up three dealers and ask the price for one quart of the new AFT, the DW. You'll get three different prices. Just last week, OKC dealer told me 10 bucks a quart, Lawton dealer told me 8 bucks a quart, got it off ebay delivered for 7 bucks a quart.

Everstart Maxx was $82 few months ago then it went up to $88 when I checked the price about 3-4 weeks ago. If it's $95 now, then Ford BXT-49 at $94 is a better buy with longer warranty.

The current battery was purchased from Fletcher Jones via roadside assistance, they charged $160-170 tax included in Dec-2004, few months ago I asked and they said the price was $249 + sale tax 8.75% - prorate of 2 years worth about $50.

I don't think the Prius was ever considered to be an econobox.

Nope. It's a status symbol for greenies. You know what economy is? Using fuel responsibly. If I drive my gas guzzling oil slugging smoking Gran Torino (that's BEFORE I pulled that motor and put in something less horrid) 5000 miles over the course of 3 years and my neighbor puts 45000 miles on his Prius in the same amount of time, who is being more economical? So he gets 50mpg, big deal. I pick and choose every mile I cover in my car. If I can walk, I walk. If I can bike, I bike. If I can wait to make that trip until the whole family has something to do, then we can all go together and get more done in one 30 mile round trip than Prius-boy does all week long running back and forth!

Back on topic, I religiously check RockAuto and Amazon and other places for deals. I spent about $31 on Amazon in the last week and had 6 transmission filters, 4 air filters, a throttle linkage adapter, a steering wheel cover, an air cleaner spacer, an air cleaner stud/wingnut, and a package of spark plug wire separators shipped to my door. I bought 3 full tune-up sets (2 for the Torino, 1 for the Durango) plus some extra bits off RockAuto for under $80 shipped a few weeks ago. I'm covered for awhile now except for fluids.

If I can order online and have it sent here, that's 30 fewer miles I have to drive. UPS guy is going to be in town every day anyway. I've lived here 3 years, he hasn't missed one weekday. And when he doesn't come to houses, he drops stuff off at the post office and they deliver it the next morning. No energy wasted there either.
