Dealer oil change pricing

Just say "no thanks". I guess there must be enough people that say "yes" to enough stuff, to make up for the people that never come back?
Once the Subaru advisor started talking about needing new rotors and pads on our hwy driven car, with 40k on it, and wouldn't service them because the weren't done at 20k, it was too much BS for me to trust them on an actual problem.... $900 for the front axle alone! I serviced the brakes myself and the pads were actually done 2 years later .at 70-80k...

Of course they are. There are those who are naive, or just want convenience and doesn't care what it costs.
The other side of the equation is, What happens when you say "No."
Does life go on, or do you get your vehicle tampered with, or when you get your OC, do you get the threads stripped on the oil pan?
It can and has happened.

I wonder if people are foregoing maintenance or finding cheaper alternatives.

I have gone with the cheaper alternative option,
Just had OC's done on the Pilot and the Accord last week.
Price was $49. each out the door using Castrol oil from a small town, independent Honda /Acura specialist.
No pressure, no upsells.

Nice.

The upsell is why I won’t utilize the free oil change. I thought about using it and maybe throwing in an alignment or something so they can actually make some kind of profit. But I figured they’re just gonna try to upsell me more anyways. I have a few oil changes on hand so not like I’m needing it.

Hopefully not... I've never had a independent garage upsell me, really at all, now that I think about it. But these are all smaller places, owners name on the sign, or he's there working, doing something, often on the wrenches still.

Never gone to a larger franchise/chain type place, other than a dealership where I bought the car. Especially if they have been the only ones working on it, they hopefully aren't crooked enough to sabotage it... They would be the ones paying to fix it, in that case....

In the dead of winter when I don't want to do it myself, my local independent shop charges $69 for 8 quarts of 0w20 synthetic out of a 55 gallon drum and a filter.
I remember back in the day, I would get coupons from Audi (we're talking early 2000s). It was $80 for an conventional oil change up to 5qts. Guess what, my car took 6.5qts and required synthetic. There, in tiny print "synthetic costs more". I used them for the free oil change that Audi used to offer when you bought a new car. I did the rest myself or I bought the stuff and paid a shop $15 to put it in.

I have found that they are anywhere on average between 25-35% cheaper than the closest Honda dealer on whatever service/repair that you mention.
What I really appreciate is that they are polite, respectful, reasonably priced, and honest as the day is long.
If they find something amiss, they tell you what it is, explain it, show you what it is, inform you whether it is an immediate issue or one that can be deferred, then give you a price if you request it.
No pressure.

The alignment check is probably how they are going to charge you. I would be curious how much they'll charge you for the alignment. I just paid $205.05 for all 4 wheel alignment on the Volvo but I understand that CA will be different.

I got lifetime dealer OFL changes on my 2017 Ford for $14.99.

In fact, my car hit 100K this week and the change was free this time by utilizing my Ford "points".

It only looks good until you look at your car next time and find the rounded off drain bolt, and half the fasteners missing on your splash shield (assuming that they didn't throw away your splash shield).
I experienced something like this from Nissan, 25 years ago. Oil change and free interior shampoo and exterior wash. for $29.95. It was a 4x4 truck so, the inside needed a clean. No brainer right?

Anyway, I drove away and immediately smelled burning oil. Stopped and looked under hood to see used oil everywhere!!! Looked like a 10 year old did the oil change. It was everywhere.

Drove back, showed the service manager and his face turned red. Now I got an engine wash and refund for the whole thing. Expensive day for Nissan. ;)

I've learned my lesson. I always tell them don't look at anything else beforehand. If it's a nice paint job that I have been maintaining, I always ask for NO WASH as well.

Funny story. On a recent 4 tire purchase/change, I forgot to mention this. (well, it seemed obvious that I was just in for new tires)
Well, I got a 3 page report! The manager admitted: "well sir, we looked and looked but we couldn't find anything wrong with your vehicle. At 260K Km and 13 years, everything looks new" (LOL)

Great deal if you live in an apartment, park on the street, and have no place to change you're own oil. I would just decline the alignment they will push, amongst anything else their gonna push to bleed you're wallet. Since you do you're own oil/filter changes, why would you bother going the dealer route. Cheaper for you to do the job, and you know it will be done correctly. It's you're decision in the end. I also do my own maintenance, and it comes out to about $28 bucks for my little 4 cylinders.

That's a great price.

I've never had a dealership try to upsell me. Midas, Les Schwab, etc. yes, but not a dealership.

If there was an attempt to upsell something you don't want or feel you don't need the answer is simply "no, thank you".

I had Honda try to upsell me multiple times. One times they even lied. Told me that my CAF was extremely dirty. I told them I replaced it the night before I dropped it off. The look I got was like "Oh crap. We were caught!"
