Dealer oil change pricing

I had Honda try to upsell me multiple times. One times they even lied. Told me that my CAF was extremely dirty. I told them I replaced it the night before I dropped it off. The look I got was like "Oh crap. We were caught!"
That's disappointing.

It only looks good until you look at your car next time and find the rounded off drain bolt, and half the fasteners missing on your splash shield (assuming that they didn't throw away your splash shield).
You know the thing that I love about fast change oil shops is they will torque your drain plug to 70 foot pounds and your oil filter to 90 foot pounds and they do it for free.

It takes me a while to do that. You're really got to put some pressure on it. When you're laying on your back, trying to get 90 foot pound torque onto an oil filter, that's not easy. If I could pay someone $45 to do this for me, that's money in the bank. What's your time worth?

Ill pass, the dealer will break tabs on my cabin air filter housing trying to get to it to upsell me, damage/yank wires trying to get their air filter cover off trying to upsell me.

My independent mechanic? Yeah he is good to go.

Gotta take that deal. Tell them up upfront you do not want an inspection. You want only the oil change.
I can and actually enjoy changing the oil in my vehicles. Kinda therapeutic for me plus I know it will be done correctly, especially correct tightening of the filter and drain plugs

Of course service departments try to upsell you . That's Capitalism . I just say NO to anything I don't want and they walk away . It's not hard . Just try it .

Having flashbacks to the first oil change I did on my truck after I bought it. As I went to take the oil filter off, I saw scratches on it from a wrench. Knew it was going to be a bear. I had to crank so hard with an oil filter wrench that it crunched it like an aluminum can. Just barely got it off. Did a full 360 degree turn with the wrench before it was loose enough I could unscrew it by hand.

When I did the transfer case and diffs, all of the plugs were way overtorqued. And they rounded the corners off of a few of them for free! All gaskets/crush washers had been reused.

I'll do everything I can for as long as I can.

We get coupons from time to time for $30-40 Mobil 1 oil changes from the Nissan dealer from time to time.
Got another one recently, and it's $45 now.

I have to say, I let them do it one time on my lady's car when I was living in a place with a small garage and much of my tools were in storage, and they didn't overtorque the drain plug, and I could unscrew the oil filter by hand. Kudos. Got lucky. 😄
